Seniors loving Chair Volleyball

Don’t tell this group of seniors its form of volleyball isn’t a sport. With focus on staying seated in the chair while rocketing a beach ball over the net, Chair Volleyball has the fun, giggles and challenge of the best of sports.

The Canyon Lake Chair Volleyball Club members meet twice a week to play amongst themselves in the increasingly-popular sport. The group is calling all seniors, 50 and older, to join them on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Holiday Bay Room at the Canyon Lake Lodge.

The Canyon Lake Chair Volleyball Club has been playing the sport in Canyon Lake for nearly 15 years. Some of its players have been playing on a regular basis since Day 1.

The game is logical and basically follows the rules of regular volleyball with one huge exception…players can’t get out of their chairs. A large beach ball replaces the regulation volleyball, the net is lower and the game is played from a sitting position.

A hard and fast rule is obvious, but not always easily followed by the novices. All derrieres must remain on the chair seat. No exceptions.

“One might think of chair volleyball as resembling the game of musical chairs,” Molly Frank, a regular player and club board member, said. “This will indeed take some of you back a few years. In essence, the game combines moderate exercise, socializing and just plain ol’ fun…all being served up in equal amounts.”

The club is inviting all those who want to come out, enjoy some laughs, play with a little competition and hit a ball around to join them.

The only requirements are to be over the age of 50 and be able to hit a beach ball. Just show up at the Lodge during one of the twice-a-week games to check out the club and to participate.

In addition to the games, the club also holds various social events throughout the year.
