Rain or shine, the ducks will race

The Canyon Lake Family Matters Club is ready to get ducks out on the water to race and all Canyon Lakers need to do to participate is to adopt as many duckies as they’d like from the club. The Lucky Duck Derby will be on March 6 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lodge Pool. Duck adoptions are underway.

The cost to adopt one duck is $3.00, $10.00 for six ducks and $20.00 for 15 ducks. There is no maximum of ducks a person can adopt.

It is encouraged to start adopting now. Only the ducks that are still available can be purchased on race day.

When a duck is adopted, the new duck parent will receive an email confirmation with the unique number that corresponds to the highly trained and race-ready rubber ducky. A picture of the adopted duck and an adoption certificate are given for each adoption.

“We hope that once you adopt your duck that you will name him or her,” the club’s Shawna Bowen said. “Then upload a copy of the adoption to our Facebook Lucky Duck Derby Race Page.”

Once the race is over, each little duck will return to its safe home…a rubber ducky sanctuary where the club will keep them safe until next year, Shawna said.

“The little ones enjoy being together,” she said. “The club surely doesn’t want any of them to get lonely out in the world alone.”

The race will be held virtually and can be viewed live on the Family Matters Facebook page and Zoom. Only those sponsoring the race categories and helpers will be allowed to be in the pool area. Winners will be announced live and a time will be coordinated to get the prizes to the winners.

How will you know if your duck wins? The person whose number matches the first duck to reach the end of the canal will win $100.00 cash. Second through fifth place will also earn prizes. The winning duck’s number and their adopter’s name will be announced live. Winning photos will also be posted.

This is a fun event for anyone of any age. Simply adopt a duck on the Family Matters website and on race day the club will launch all the ducks in one end of the community pool and race them via water hose to the other side. Prizes are awarded to the first five to cross the finish line.
