Canyon Lake hosts USTA Open

After taking a year off due to the pandemic, Canyon Lake hosted the USTA Open. It was an exciting weekend of non stop tennis that began on Friday and went through Sunday.

The USTA Open men’s singles final was between returning 2020 USTA Open champion, 19 year old Jean Baptiste Badon and 36 year old Alessandro Ventre of Rio Grande de Sul, Brazil.

Ventre beat Jean-Baptiste in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to win the Canyon Lake USTA Open in men’s singles. Ventre’s powerful forehands had the crowd captivated. Spectators commented that it was exceptional tennis to watch.

The USTA Open women’s singles finals was matched between Megan McCray and Brandy Walker with Megan McCray winning the USTA open women’s singles and awarded a trophy and a grand prize check of $750.00.

The final results of the Canyon Lake USTA Open results are:

Men’s open singles: Alessandro Ventre defeating Jean-Baptiste Badon 6-3, 6-3

Women’s open singles: Megan McCray defeating Brandy Walker 6-4, 6-4

Women’s open doubles: Brandy Walker and Liz Margaret Pinson defeating Brooke Easterly and Kaylin Kielty 6-0, 6-1

Men’s 4.0 singles: Andrew Pennell defeating Fernando Verdugo 6-4, 6-1

Men’s 3.5 doubles: Jason Maslach and Bill Conlin defeating Bill Van Vleet and Billy Furlong

Men’s 3.5 singles: Jason Maslach defeating Bill Conlin, 6-2, 6-3

Women’s 4.0 singles: Heidi Schulyer defeated Dana Boyan, 6-3, 6-2

Women’s 3.5 doubles: Michelle Porter and Melissa Conner defeated Spranger and Vanderlinden, 6-3, 6-2

Women’s 3.5 singles: Erin Furlong defeated Angeline Esmero 6-1, 6-1

Women’s 3.0 doubles: Wendy Williams and Danette Conlin defeated Jennifer Denson and Elizabeth Cardoza, 6-4, 6-3

Open doubles: Thompkins/Weishan defeated Dilmaghanian/Sandoval, 6-0, 6-1

Men’s 4.0 singles: Andrew Pennell defeated Arthur Vega 6-4, 6-1

There were no 3.0 singles.

The Canyon Lake Tennis Club would like to thank the Canyon Lake POA for bringing another USTA event to the community and together with the Tennis Club, hosted some extraordinary and talented athletes and visitors from all over the country.

Canyon Lake Tennis Club extends a big thank you to the USTA officials, Canyon Lake tennis pro, Bobby Kielty, Meredith Kielty and Phil Braun for their work behind the scenes and their tremendous efforts to make this annual event successful. They greeted every athlete and visitor bright and early each day at 7:00 a.m. Guests came in from all over the world, including our open men’s singles champion, Alessandro Ventre originally from Brazil.

A thank you to the Canyon Lake Ball Kids who helped out on Sunday’s finals, Haley Kielty, Aiden Kielty, Dorin Maslach, Paige Willliams and Talan Denson. The kids came together quickly and attended each finals match to help on the courts during a fast paced match. They worked so efficiently and retrieved balls and assisted these professional tennis athletes competing in the finals. They worked professionally and they did a fantastic job.

The Club wants to congratulate all USTA finalists and champions. Not only were there several athletes from California, but also from Las Vegas. Several Canyon Lake residents also participated in the matches during the USTA Open.

Final winners were awarded trophies and a $50.00 cash prize. In addition to their trophies, the grand prize checks were awarded to Canyon Lake USTA Open singles men and women’s winners.

Finally, the Club wants to thank everyone who participated and played this past weekend. It was a privilege to host such exceptional athletes in Canyon Lake.
