CL Tennis Club holds Doubles August Mixer

Peggy McDonald Basubas and Ed Basubas were the big winners Saturday at the Canyon Lake Tennis Club’s Doubles August Mixer. Twenty four participated in the tournament and each played four rounds of matches, all doubles.

Peggy was the high scorer for the women with 22 points and Ed was the high scorer for the men with 22 points.

Prizes for the mixer included a $15 gift card and tennis balls. Winners in Saturday’s mixer were Dawn Wessel, Anthony Hardin, Nancy Contreras, Peggy McDonald Basubas, Robert James Gray Jr. and Linda Hockenberry.

At Saturday’s mixer, the players rotate out and sets are not the traditional length, Club Director Carlos Hansen, who organized the event, said. It took a total of eight points per match to win a set, for example scores could vary, 4-4, 2-6, 5-3, and 7-1.

Each player played four rounds of these eight-point sets with no add scoring. Men serve to men during a deuce and women serve to women in a deuce to make the serving abilities more fair, Carlos said. The players were arranged in teams by player abilities.

“The tennis tournaments are a great way for the tennis community to get together and play several matches,” Jennifer Denson said. “It was a great morning of tennis.”

Currently the club does not have set court times or times for social tennis, so the mixers are a great way to enjoy tennis, while socializing with friends, she said.
