Canyon Lake to turn blue again on 9/11

This blue-lighted memorial was constructed by Joe and Kenni Potter to commemorate Canyon Lake’s 9/11 Tribute in Light on Sept. 11 last year. It was placed in their front yard and neighbors throughout Canyon Lake did something similar. Another somber tribute is being planned for next month’s commemoration of 20 years since the 9/11 tragedy.Photo by Joe Potter.

As promised after last year’s incredibly successful 9/11 commemoration, members of the 9/11 Tribute in Light committee are organizing something similar to what it did last year in Canyon Lake to commemorate the 9/11 attack that occurred in New York City in 2011. The memorial/vigil this year will be in memory of those lost in the 9/11 attack that took place 20 years ago.

According to Illysa DeCasperis, the committee is in the process of getting t-shirts and lawn signs that can be obtained by way of donation. A Go-Fund-Me page has been set up with donations going to T2T, Tunnel to Towers, she said.

Illysa said, though, that the iconic blue twin beams cast into the sky from the Lodge area will not be a part of the tribute this year in an effort to keep the event solemn and a quieter memorial/vigil.

The community is being encouraged to once again light their homes in blue and are being motivated to describe what they’ve done in a creative post on the 9/11 Tribute in Light Facebook page. Two gift certificates that are being donated by the Canyon Center will be given to the most creative designs.

On 9/11 at 9:11 p.m. Canyon Lakers are encouraged to step out of their homes for a moment of silence, Illysa said.

“Canyon Lakers won’t ever forget,” she said. “The committee and I would like to thank the wonderful Canyon Lake CommUNITY.”

The 9/11 Tribute in Light committee meets twice a month to talk about the details of the 9/11 commemoration and those details are still in progress. More of those details can be expected in the coming weeks.
