20 compete in 1st triathlon in over a year

The Canyon Lake Triathlon and Fitness Club held what was its first triathlon in over a year Saturday and the 20 who participated were both exhausted and ecstatic.

The triathlon was non-competitive and was only timed by the individuals. The distance triathlon, which took place entirely inside of the city, consisted of a 500-yard swim in the lake, followed by a 13-mile bike ride and then finished with a 5k run.

“This was one of the biggest turnouts we have had so far. The event was a blast,” Maria Kivrizis, the club president, said. “Some club members participated in their first triathlon ever, and others who joined were just getting back into doing triathlons again. Everyone was so supportive of each other and enjoyed the friendly competition and camaraderie.”

The event consisted of several volunteers, who along with family and friends, cheered on the athletes throughout the triathlon.

“We had amazing volunteers that were out on the paddleboards for swim support,” Maria said. “We also had other volunteers out on golf carts as our mobile support for the bike course. Water tables were also set up on the bike and a run course.”

The club is excited to host more future events this year, Maria said, with plans for an event scheduled every month. The next event will be an Olympic distance/sprint triathlon on June 19.

“Several of our club members are signed up to complete in Half Ironman  (70.3 total miles) and Full Ironman (140.6 total miles) competitions this year,” Maria said. “In preparation for these races, we have begun training. You will see us swimming at the pool and lake, riding in the city and running throughout the city. We welcome others to join us in our training days as well as joining in club events!”
