City Hall opening back up to the public

After more than a year of being closed to the public, the City of Canyon Lake is re-opening its offices to the public on Monday. Although employees have been working inside the offices, the doors have been closed as part of COVID-19 restrictions.

With the City Hall open to the public, the following guidelines will be followed:

In accordance with State of California regulations, masks must be worn at all times in City Hall, and a mask must cover the mouth and nose. For those who opt to not wear a mask, they can call the main line at City Hall (951) 244-2955 and their business can continue to be done virtually.

Social distancing will be practiced, and all visitors are expected to follow the markers throughout City Hall. Only two members of the public will be permitted in each office at a time.

Temperature screening and hand sanitizing stations will be made available.

The city is encouraging those who are able to conduct business without physically coming to City Hall to do so.

“In order to best serve our residents, if you can utilize our virtual services or submit items via mail, email, or our drop box, please do so,” the city said in a release to the public. “This will free up city staff to assist members of the public who require in-person services.”

Allison Bergherm named Student of Month

Allison Bergherm will be honored Tuesday as the Temescal Canyon High School Student of the Month for April. The Canyon Lake student is being honored as part of a Zoom Ceremony by the Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month program.

Students of the Month from other Lake Elsinore Unified School District schools will also be recognized at the ceremony.

Yacht Club giving two $1,000 scholarships

Two full-time Canyon Lake residents will receive Canyon Lake Yacht Club $1,000 scholarships this spring. High school seniors need to apply for the scholarships by April 30.

A school transcript accompanied by a 500-word essay is required with the application. The essay topic will be included within the application which can be obtained by contacting the Yacht Club Scholarship Chair Karen Doherty at ladydoherty@yahoo.com.

Chamber invites community to play ‘bingo’

Members of the community are being invited to participate in the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce’s Business Bingo game. Winners will receive gift certificates from local businesses. More than 20 Chamber members are part of the bingo game. The game rules are simple and follow traditional bingo protocol. The first person to complete five squares in a row and comments #CanyonLakeBingo on his or her Facebook or Instagram page will be the winner. The squares on the online bingo card are interactive and once clicked on will redirect to different websites. To access the virtual bingo, go to http://shorturl.at/rNW78.

Prizes include a $25 gift certificate from Bombshells ’n Bling and a $25 gift certificate from Martin’s Detailing. Receipts, photos, screenshots are required to show proof.

Blood Drive set for Monday

Blood donations during the COVID-19 pandemic are needed more than ever. Canyon Lake residents and friends are rushing to aid those who need the blood by signing up for The American Red Cross blood drive at the Canyon Lake Golf & Country Club on Monday.

Appointments are necessary and can be scheduled online at www.redcrossblood.org with sponsor code CLGCC. There are still appointment spots available, but are filling fast. The drive will take place in the Magnolia Room from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

City looking for fire department art

With the formation of the City of Canyon Lake Fire Department, the city is in need of a patch that its firefighters and department personnel will wear on their uniforms. The city is asking its citizens to submit designs for the patch. The finalists will be voted on by city members to choose the one to be used.

“A patch will need to be created that is representative of our city and that will be worn proudly for decades to come,” the city said in its announcing the contest. “The City of Canyon Lake is seeking submissions from talented Canyon Lake residents on what this new patch would look like. This patch will be worn by each firefighter on the left shoulder of their uniform.”

The designs will be accepted throughout the month of April. The fire ad hoc committee will review all the submissions and will choose the best five patches by May 6. Canyon Lake residents will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred patch out of those five finalists. The one with the most votes will become the official Canyon Lake Fire Department patch. Information will be released on how to vote at the beginning of May.

Canyon Lake residents of all ages are encouraged to submit a design by emailing it to media@canyonlakeca.gov. The patch must include “Canyon Lake Fire Department” and “Established 2022.” Any artwork or photo designs must be inside the “inner boundary” of the patch, which is indicated by the two thin lines on the patch. The patch should look similar to a standard city fire department patch (examples accompany this story). A design template is available on the city’s website. If a design is created using digital design or photo editing software, the font(s) used for any text need to be included as well as the original files.

Canned Heat Concert rescheduled

The Canned Heat Concert originally scheduled for April 24 has been rescheduled to Oct. 15. Tickets purchased for the April concert are being transferred to the Oct.15 show.

Tickets are on sale now with General Admission tickets priced at $44 and VIP Admission at $64. Previously purchased tickets for the Canned Heat concert in 2020 that was postponed are valid for this concert.

Canned Heat rose to fame because their knowledge and love of blues music was both wide and deep. Emerging in 1966, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite. Hite took the name “Canned Heat” from a 1928 recording by Tommy Johnson.

They were joined by Henry “The Sunflower” Vestine, another ardent record collector who was a former member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Rounding out the band in 1967 were Larry “The Mole” Taylor on bass, an experienced session musician who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis and The Monkees and Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra on drums who had played in two of the biggest Latin American bands, Los Sinners and Los Hooligans.

The band attained three worldwide hits, “On The Road Again” in 1968, “Let’s Work Together” in 1970 and “Going Up The Country” in 1969 became rock anthems throughout the world with the later being adopted as the unofficial theme song for the film Woodstock and the “Woodstock Generation.”

JWC seeks scholarship applicants

The Canyon Lake Jr. Women’s Club is looking for Canyon Lake students for its annual scholarships. Canyon Lake residents who are currently seniors in high school and who are planning on continuing their education after graduation are eligible to apply. Continuing education can be in the form of four-year or two-year universities, vocational schools, institutes and academies.

The scholarship is merit-based and its requirements for entry have changed those of previous years. There is a 3.0 minimum GPA requirement. Applicants must respond to a prompt with a two-page double-spaced essay and submit two letters of recommendation. They also must be interviewed by a panel of scholarship chair members. The newest component is that applicants will receive bonus points on their verified volunteer work.

Applications are available on the club’s website at canyonlakejwc.org. Completed applications are due by April 23 and must be submitted through email at jwcscholarships@gmail.com.

Warm weather makes pool appealing

Canyon Lake weather is turning warm, with hot temperatures coming soon. The Canyon Lake pool at the Lodge is open and appealing now that the weather has shifted.

Currently on spring hours, the pool is open daily for exercise/lap swim daily hours from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and for open swimming from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There are currently no swim sessions or reservations required. However, there are still temporary rules to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Some of these rules include wearing face coverings when interacting with pool staff or other members outside of participants’ households, practicing social distancing and avoiding coming to the pool if sick.

Help wanted at Lodge Pool

The Canyon Lake POA is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Part-Time Pool Attendant. Pool attendants are responsible for the enforcement of pool rules as they assist members and guests in the enjoyment of pool activities.

Applicants must be at least 17-years-old and need to send a cover letter and résumé to the Canyon Lake POA Human Resources Department. Park for large dogs seeks bids

The Canyon Lake POA is currently accepting bids for the Large Dog Park Project at Eastport Park. This project aims to transform the large dog park area at Eastport Park into a fun playground for the bigger dogs. Bids for the project are due by 2:00 p.m. on April 22.

The design plans include a major renovation of the current area with new dog agility equipment, decomposed granite pathways, two additional shade structures, more trees and benches. The existing dog water fountain, solar lighting and dog bag stations will be used in the new design.

Virtual County Job Fair coming April 20

COVID-19 has shut down some of the traditional Riverside County events, including job fairs. A county-wide virtual job fair, though, is on the horizon and the county is looking for both employers and job seekers to participate.

As part of April’s Riverside County Innovation Month, the county is holding its first county-wide virtual job fair on April 20 from 9:00 a.m. until noon. During the virtual job fair event, job seekers will be able to enter specific online rooms, designated by region, to search for jobs.

Job seekers may choose to keep their search specific to a region or explore job openings in all regions of Riverside County. The virtual job fair platform will allow job seekers to upload their résumés in advance to be prepared for potential interaction with employers using chat and one-on-one video technology.

The Riverside County Virtual Job Fair is free to those seeking jobs. Employers are being encouraged to connect with these individuals. Both need to register to participate. Registration is being handled on the county website, https://rivcobcs.org/riv-co-jobfair.
