POA Board tables sign rule decision again

After a contentious several weeks that included a “protest parade” of hundreds of golf carts and a petition signed by hundreds more, the Canyon Lake POA Board pushed a decision on the campaign sign rule change to next month’s board meeting.

“I’m pleased that we’ve received the interaction,” Canyon Lake POA President Chris Poland said at Tuesday’s board meeting. “Based on the spirit of the petition, I decided instead of bringing a proposed set of rules tonight, to take another month and extended discussion time to be very specific about what we’d like those rules to say.”

Chris said the petition, which asked that the rule change be brought to the community membership for vote, wasn’t valid because it is in the bylaws that the board sets rules, not members.

The board set a meeting for March 23 to discuss the rules again. Chris will have a set of suggestions that will be the basis for the meeting.

The rule changes being sought by the board have to do with the language on political campaign signs and is looking to further define what a sign consists of, adding, among other things, flags to the definition. Many members of the community bristled at content on flags being regulated and have pushed back.

Chris and the board have insisted the rules they are revising are very narrow and limited to campaign signs being displayed on POA common property.

Members are being encouraged by Chris to write to the board via email to state opinions and to attend the virtual meeting on March 23.

In other business at the board meeting Tuesday, the board unanimously approved the addition of a rule prohibiting wakesurfing in the North Ski Area. After listening to several in opposition to the new rule, the board sided with protecting the slalom course, which has received recent damage to its buoys that make up the course there.

Also, the board also approved the annual assessment for the new fiscal year. Each owner will pay $3515.00 in assessments per owned lot for the 2021-22 fiscal year.2
