2021 candidate deadline Thursday for POA Board

Those looking to throw their hat into the ring as a candidate for the Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors have until Thursday to turn in the necessary paperwork to be on the ballot. There are three positions on the five-member board available for the two-year terms on the board.

The annual election of the Canyon Lake POA will culminate in the Annual Meeting of the Members on May 13. The deadline for turning in Intent to Run Packets for prospective board candidates is Thursday (March 11) at 3:00 p.m. The packets are available either in person at the POA Corporate office in the Canyon Lake Town Center or electronically by emailing the POA and requesting a digital packet. The email address is corporate@canyonlakepoa.com and the person requesting the packet needs to include his or her name, track and lot in the email.

This year, of the three vacancies, two of the incumbents can re-run for a two-year term. Canyon Lake POA Board Director terms are limited to two consecutive, two-year terms, totaling four years. Previous board members who have used up their two terms can re-run after a four-year waiting period. (There is a measure on the ballot this year that looks to change the two-year terms to four-year terms and elections to bi-annual instead of annual.)

The Canyon Lake POA recently produced a summary of what is involved in serving on the board. It said an average Board Director will spend approximately 728 hours a year dedicated to Canyon Lake POA business. That averages out to two hours a day and, according to those who have served, “It can sometimes feel like a part-time job.”

Those 728 hours consisted of 160 hours of Round Table and Local Agencies Meetings, 124 hours of Meetings and Workshops, 156 hours of Committee Meetings, 104 hours of signing checks, 50 hours of Forums and Orientations, 50 hours on emails, 48 hours of Board Book Review, 24 hours of Executive Committee and Staff Projects and 12 hours at Community Events.

And all of those hours are unpaid and fully volunteered. Unlike some public agencies who pay stipends to their boards, property owner association volunteers are unpaid.

“Next time you see a Board Director, please thank them for their service!” the association said in the handout. “They work hard to try their best to serve our community and all member’s interests.”

Because the Canyon Lake POA is an especially large property owners association, the five members of the board have many responsibilities and can be busy. The association is extremely active with multiple projects under construction, ongoing maintenance and day-to-day operations with over 130 employees working every day.

Some of the typical responsibilities of a Board Director include: Open Board, Committee and Executive Session Meetings; Staff Projects; Workshops; Invoice Review; President/General Manager Calls; Litigation Strategy Calls; Board Orientation; ACC Appeals; Member Discipline; Contract Review; Email Review & Response; Member Meetings; Community Events; Round Table and Local Agencies Meetings; Townhalls; Contract, Check and Minute Signatures; Candidate Orientation and Meet the Candidate Forums and Board Book Review (a typical month’s Board agenda and supporting documentation can be upwards of 400 pages).
