Group organizes golf cart rally for this Sunday

With the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association looking to revise its signage rules, one group in the community is organizing a rally to express its opinion on the matter. The Sunday parade of golf carts will be promoting individuals’ rights to display flags, according to organizer Tim Cook.

Tim’s “Fight for our Flags” group and all those who would like to join them will be staging at Gault Field at 3:30 p.m. and at 4:00 p.m. will head out to Longhorn, Vacation and Canyon Lake Drive on its way to the Canyon Lake POA office in the Canyon Lake Town Center.

“Join us for a rally/parade to unite our diverse community and to show the POA Board of Directors that we will fight and come together to ensure all community members have the freedom to fly and display any flag of their choosing,” Tim said. “It is our constitutional right to do so.”

The Canyon Lake POA Board at its meeting last week tabled a decision on revising some of its rules to help define what types of signage should be included in the existing rules. After hearing from hundreds of Canyon Lakers on the subject, the board is expected to begin the rule change process at its next board meeting.

Although flags were mentioned during the various discussions, board members tried to clarify that the revised rules were not speaking of traditional flags. They also clarified that the only signage the association could monitor and make rules on would be those that are displayed in Canyon Lake POA community areas, including the set back between the street and the beginning of a property owner’s private lot.

All are welcomed to participate in Sunday’s parade, Tim said, and those in the parade are encouraged to bring and display flags of their choice. He said he is discouraging individuals from bringing flags with profanity on them.
