Schools extend distance learning through March 26

Canyon Lake students will remain at home for school after the school district extended distance learning through at least March 26. Despite the relaxing of the stay-at-home orders by the California governor, Riverside County remains in the Purple Tier of the COVID-19 restriction protocol.

Lake Elsinore Unified School District officials said its decision was based on the fact that Riverside County remains in the Purple Tier, continues to experience high COVID-19 case rates and has a limited vaccine appointment availability.

With the extension of distance learning, the current elementary class rosters will remain in place through March 26. Class rosters will only change if elementary students return to in-person instruction.

“Extending distance learning and current class roster for students allows for a minimal interruption for students and staff,” District Superintendent Dr. Doug Kimberly said.

The district board will review the current distance learning directive at its scheduled Special Governing Board Meeting on March 18.

At the meeting it will re-evaluate the COVID-19 implications and determine the next steps regarding the possibility of reopening and providing in-person instruction for its students.
