City golf champions crowned

Women’s Champion Mia Golovich

Golfers Mia Golovich and Robert Funk won their divisions of the Canyon Lake City Golf Tournament over the weekend at the Canyon Lake Golf & Country Club.

Over 100 Canyon Lake residents participated in the two-day tournament with Mia winning the women’s division and Robert the men’s division.

“This tournament is always a blast,” Joe Kamashian, the event coordinator, said. “I’m very excited about the amount of people participating. Participation has really grown in the past three years. We have received so much support from our city and we are very grateful for that.”

Men and women competed separately within different Champion Flights. Additional flights played gross and by handicap.

The Canyon Lake Golf & Country Club, with the sponsorship of the city and the Canyon Lake POA, hosts the city tournament and Joe thinks it is gaining momentum.

“This is the sixth year of running this tournament. It wasn’t run for a couple of years, but started back up in 2018,” he said. “We continue to see it grow.”

Many golfers cherish this tournament as well.

“It’s very exciting to see this starting back up,” Jon Evans said. “The field is growing and we’re getting great golfers. The tournament this year is bigger than last year. It’s a fun experience. The course is in amazing shape and everyone who comes to play here really enjoys the course.”

Both champions will have their names engraved on the perpetual City Championship Tournament trophy, which is housed at the Country Club.

All participants played two rounds of golf, received prizes, cart usage and lunch. The organizers are anticipating the tournament will resume next year.
