Hambright, Jernigan win Canyon Lake golf tourneys

Two major Canyon Lake Men’s Golf Club tournaments wrapped up recently with Ryan Hambright running away with the Club Championship and Jason Jernigan narrowly defeating Anton Riniti for the President’s Cup title.

Ryan, a relatively new member of the Canyon Lake Men’s Golf Club, coasted to the Club Championship and will advance to the SCGA Tournament of Champions. Ryan scored a four round gross score of five under par, winning by 17 strokes over the second place competitor.

Four golfers competed in the final round. The competition was tight among those finishing second through fourth. Brett Geer (+12) finished second and past champions Brandon Majarro (+14), and Marcus Schonabaum (+16) followed in third and fourth place.

“Many members watched the playoffs to support their favorites,” Men’s Club President Barry Talbot said. “And also because they enjoyed seeing the competition.”

Every year the club sends its best golfer, determined by the Club Championship, to the SCGA Tournament of Champions. This year’s event will be held Dec. 7 at the Angeles National Golf Club. Brandon represented Canyon Lake Country Club last year and placed 50th out of 89 club champions throughout Southern California with an 8 over par score.

The final results for the Club Championship were:
Ryan Hambright: 68-68-71-72 = 279 (-5),
Brett Geer: 78-72-69-77 = 296 (+12),
Brandon Mojarro: 73-77-76-72 = 298 (+14) and
Marcus Schonabaum: 74-78-74-74 = 300 (+16).

Participation in the tournament was very strong with members competing in three additional gross championship flights consisting of the first three rounds: B flight winner was Ryan Good with a plus 24, C flight winner was Mark Wagoner with a plus 40, D flight winner was Dudley Thompson with a plus 44.

Each championship flight also had a net winner, where the scores for the three rounds were adjusted for the handicap of the player. The net winners for each flight were: A flight net winner was Ryan Hambright at even par, B flight net winner was Jesse Beecher minus 2, C flight winner was Marg Wagoner with a plus 10 and D flight winner was Dudley Thompson with a plus 2.

Players also had the opportunity to compete on gross score for three rounds based on age with a masters, senior and super senior category.

The top three finishers in the Senior (age 55-64) category were: Marcus Schonabaum at plus 13, Dan Rawlins at plus 14 and Bill Conlin at plus 27.

The top three finishers in the Super Senior (age 65-74) category were: Steve McCain at plus 23, Ted Smykla at plus 27 and Mike Sanders at plus 30.

The top three finishers in the Masters (age 75+) category were: Dudley Thompson at plus 44, Fred Finger at plus 45 and Thomas Scudieri at plus 48.

“This is a grueling multi-day tournament and congratulations to all who finished and especially to those who placed in the top tier of their respective groups,” Barry said. “A special thanks to Jerry Watson, our tournament director, and to head golf professional Pat Kemball and his staff for once again making our tournament a success.”

In the President’s Cup Tournament, Jason won the round with a hot putting performance on a very hot Friday last week where temperatures hit 110 degrees. Jason was reported to have holed putts with just one putt 12 times and only had a total of 22 putts over the 18 holes.

The tournament was originally scheduled in April, but because of COVID-19 restrictions was postponed and finally wrapped up last week.
