Yacht Club members find the whale; all is well

The Yacht Club’s first annual Whale Hunt, held last Saturday, gave many boaters the opportunity to enjoy a day on the lake all in the name of friendly competition. The goal for participants was to find “Lakie the Whale” by finding puzzle pieces around the East Bay, answering questions about objects seen around the lake and collecting various items.

Eleven boat captains along with their crew, totaling about 45 people, accepted the challenge. Whale hunters of all ages scavenged for items such as leaves, bottle caps and a page from The Friday Flyer. They answered questions such as “What is the vertical tunnel clearance at full pool?” and “What color is the roof over the playset at Indian Beach?”

For each successful task a team completed, boat captains were awarded a point. The participants and their results are: Captain Harold and Beverly Willard and crew Steve and Sheryl Davenport (31 points), Todd Storer and Lori Blanchard (30 points), the Martilla family (30 points), Eddie Rayes (29 points), Rose, Sandy and Alan Goldberg (29 points), Houston O’Malley (29 points), Rich and Sue Hoover (28 points), Ila Goldstein (26 points) and Commodore Dave Dain and crew (24 points).

“The Yacht Club is happy to report that the event was a success and Lakie the Whale was ‘relocated’,” the club’s Paul Hawker said. “However, our marine biologist says that Lakie recently gave birth to a baby whale. This means that it will be necessary to hold more whale hunts every year!”

The Canyon Lake Yacht Club announced it is planning on making the Whale Hunt an annual event. “We hope to see even more people come out for the Whale Hunt next year,” Paul said.
