Pickleball Club to host junior clinic

The Canyon Lake Pickleball Club is hosting its 3rd Annual Junior Clinic for all children ages 9 thru 17. The event will run from June 22 through June 24 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Lessons will be the first two nights and game play the third night.

There will be a free raffle drawing for prizes. Entry fee is $5.00 total and includes all three nights of instruction and entry into the raffle drawing. Parents must sign up their children by Monday night, June 22, at 6:45 p.m. A parent or responsible adult must be in the vicinity of the courts during the lessons.

Due to COVID-19, there are some extra precautions that will be taken. The clinic will be limited to the first 24 juniors who register to allow for social distancing. Parents should bring a chair to sit in during the lesson, as social distancing will be practiced by all in attendance.

Paddles will be provided by the Pickleball Club. Paddles will be cleaned each night before lessons. Please contact Jeannette at clpickleball951@gmail.com with questions or to sign up for the event.

POA to change GM purchasing authority

The Canyon Lake POA board plans to approve a list of projects for implementation this year at its July board meeting. The plans include a wide variety of repairs, renovations and new amenities that will continue the POA’s efforts to be a family-oriented and resort-style suburban community undergoing continuous improvement.

One of the things that needs to be done to support those efforts, the association said on its website, is a revision in the purchasing and contracting authority given to its general manager. He needs to be able to move forward with implementing these plans in an efficient and expeditious manner with timely input from the community, the POA said.

At its June meeting, the board presented and approved a policy change expanding and clarifying the general manager’s purchasing and contracting authority for 28-day reading. This proposed change recognizes the need to set guidelines in four different areas.

When it comes to routine maintenance and fixed equipment repairs, there is a need to move quickly in order to get things done. The budget process adequately plans for these expenses and additional approval is not needed, the POA said When it comes to large non-equipment repair and replacement or capital improvement projects, community input is valuable and board approval is still needed.

The board has proposed a Resolution and Policy for Purchasing and Contracting Authority. It includes specific definitions and a standard approval process for projects of various sizes that the board believes is reasonable, workable and useful to allow projects to proceed at the pace it has utilized the past few years while soliciting community input and involvement when appropriate, the POA said.

AFV receives grant

Animal Friends of the Valleys, which services Canyon Lake’s pet shelter needs, has received a Rachael Ray Save Them All COVID-19 Relief Grant from Best Friends Animal Society. The grant will ensure that Save the Pets continues to help save the lives of homeless pets living in southwest Riverside County.

“This grant allows us to continue our lifesaving work by helping us with our Save the Pets program, which is central to our organization’s mission as we serve our community,” Monica Wylie, the shelter’s executive director, said. “In this uncertain time, our goal will be to save as many dogs and cats as we were on track to save prior to the pandemic. We are grateful to our community for its support and appreciate the help from Best Friends Animal Society in making Save the Pets possible.”

Animal Friends of the Valleys is an active partner in the Best Friends Network, which offers resources and support to fellow shelters, rescue groups and animal welfare organizations across the country.

“When you choose to foster or adopt your next pet, you are becoming part of the solution right here in our community,” Monica said. “And community is more important than ever right now.”

The Rachael Ray Save Them All COVID-19 Relief Program, administered by Best Friends and funded by The Rachael Ray Foundation, provides COVID-19 relief grants to shelters and rescue groups across the country.
