Grads receive top county awards

Amanda Martilla and Breanna Martilla have been honored by the Riverside County Office of Education with a Certificate of Recognition. Based on their enrollments, each high school in the county was asked to select between one and three students taking into consideration their grade-point average, class rank, extracurricular activities and community service. Amanda and Breanna, twin sisters from Canyon Lake, were two of the three Class of 2020 valedictorians at Temescal Canyon High School.

“I continue to be impressed with the accomplishments of each student nominated to be recognized for the Student Academic Award,” Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Judy D. White said. “These scholars have reached milestones and achievements as students, engineers, scientists, athletes, musicians, actors and artists. It is evident by these accomplishments and what we see each and every day from these young people that our future is in very good hands.”

EVMWD to expand local sewer

Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD) has received a $1.4 million grant from the United States Bureau of Reclamation towards the planning of the expansion of its Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility to meet the needs of the community’s growing population.

With growth in the area projected to increase nearly 50 percent over the next 25 years, water consumption and wastewater production will place a greater demand on EVMWD’s system. As a result, EVMWD is embarking on an expansion facility to increase capacity, upgrade treatment processes and improve efficiency.

The expansion will allow for an additional 4 million gallons of wastewater treatment daily, bringing the plant total capacity to 12 million gallons per day. Once treated, this recycled water is used as a supplement for lake levels in Lake Elsinore, as well as for parks, golf courses and other landscaped common areas in the area.

“We are grateful to the Bureau of Reclamation for their partnership and shared vision of a long-term solution that will benefit our community far into the future,” Andy Morris, president of the EVMWD board of directors, said. “As our community continues to grow, these improvements will benefit our businesses and residents now and into the future.”

The project, which is in its planning phase at this time, has received $1.9 million in grants and $5.9 million in no interest loans. The district continues to pursue other grants and low interest loans to offset the costs of construction of this project, which is anticipated to be complete by December 2023.

EVMWD is only one of nine recipients who have received the Title XVI Water Reclamation and Reuse projects funding through the Bureau. EVMWD has received other funding from the Bureau to assist with water saving projects including the Drought Contingency Plan Development project and the Advanced Meter Infrastructure system.

28 Day Reading

At the June 2 meeting of the Canyon Lake POA Board, the board proposed a 28-day reading regarding board policy.

The Revised Board Policy would allow residents to be involved at the meetings by conducting the meeting virtually online or televising it when the meeting was conducted in person.

“Your Board of Directors is committed to the philosophy of continuous improvements to enhance and streamline the services provided to our members and this will allow more people to participate in our meetings,” according to the POA website. “It is the intent of the revised policy to ensure that the Open Session meetings are conducted ina manner that improves our members ability to “attend” them.”

The policy has not been approved, as of yet, as it was proposed as a 28 day reading, meaning the community is given 28 days to respond to the proposal. The board then takes the responses of the community into consideration and decides to adopt the policy, make changes to it or leave it as it is.

Canyon Lakers are encouraged to express their opinions on 28 day readings.

The board strongly encourages all Canyon Lake residents to voice their opinions regarding  Canyon Lake policies and issues by contacting the board through email at: board@canyonlakepoa.com
