May is Bicycle Safety Month

May is Bicycle Safety Month and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is encouraging those out walking, driving or riding their bikes to look out for one another while practicing social distancing measures.

“Biking is a great way to get fresh air and exercise, but keep in mind others are staying at home, too, and have the same idea,” Sgt. Steve Jimenez said. “It’s important to keep you and your family safe by remaining aware of your surroundings even though there’s less vehicular traffic.”

The Sheriff’s Department suggests the following tips to help keep everybody safe:

Always wear a helmet and never ride impaired.

Follow social distancing measures and maintain at least six feet of physical space between other riders and those out walking.

Be seen: wear brightly colored clothing and have bike lights handy (front white light and rear red flashing light or reflectors).

Use hand signals when turning or stopping.

Rules of the road still apply: Bicyclists must travel in the same direction as other traffic and must follow the same requirements as any slow moving vehicle.

Two Canyon Lakers graduate from Boise State University

This spring at Boise State University, two Canyon Lake residents were among the 2,785 students eligible for 3,232 degrees and certificates.

Sydney Edwards graduated with a Criminal Justice Bachelor of Science degree and Taylor Connor graduated with a Nursing RN Bachelor of Science degree.

A public metropolitan research university with nearly 28,000 students, Boise State is located in Idaho’s capital city. The university has a growing research agenda and plays a crucial role in the region’s knowledge economy and quality of life.

Kerrie Paterson graduates from Western Governors University

Kerrie Paterson of Canyon Lake earned a Bachelor of Science, Nursing degree from Western Governors University. The online, nonprofit university has graduated over 178,000 students from across the country since its inception in 1997.

WGU has awarded 6,313 undergraduate and 4,975 graduate degrees this year. Graduates’ areas of study include business, K-12 education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing. The average time to graduation for those earning a bachelor’s degree was 2 years, 3 months, while the average time for graduate programs was 1 year, 6 months. The average age of those who graduated is 38 years old.

WGU pioneered competency-based education, which measures learning rather than time spent in class. Designed to meet the needs of working adults, courses allow students to study and learn on their own schedules with individualized, one-to-one faculty support. They complete courses as soon as they demonstrate that they have mastered the subject matter, allowing them to move quickly through material they already know so they can allocate time for what they still need to learn. As a result, many WGU students are able to accelerate their studies, saving both time and money.
