Fiesta Day cancelled; will return next year

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another victim. The community’s largest sponsored event of the year, Fiesta Day, is being cancelled. Fiesta Day, scheduled for May 23, is an annual event held during the Memorial Day weekend.

The Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors and its management have decided to cancel until next year the community’s 47th annual Fiesta Day because of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the state, county and city orders against any gathering of people.

“The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get a vaccine,” Governor Gavin Newsom said at a recent press conference. Hence, he said, mass gatherings are not likely to be allowed for the foreseeable future.

The Canyon Lake POA staff and Fiesta Day Committee decided against postponing to a later date this year and will, instead, hold the next Fiesta Day during the Memorial Day weekend 2021. Vendors and sponsors who have already submitted payments will be contacted by the Canyon Lake POA staff to begin the process of refunding those funds. Vendors and sponsors who have any questions are encouraged to email activities@canyonlakepoa.com.

“We are very disappointed to not have Fiesta Day this year,” Canyon Lake POA Assistant General Manager Lynn Jensen said. “We know how much it means to the community. However, with the continued impacts of COVID-19, cancelling this event is the right thing to do.”

The Canyon Lake POA will continue to heed advice from the state, county and city regarding how to move forward on community events it sponsors, she said.

“We will begin hosting and planning future events once it has been deemed safe to do so,” Lynn said. “In the meantime, we ask that all residents continue to adhere to all public health guidelines so that we can all return to normal soon.”
