Free spay, neuter vouchers to be handed out Tuesday

Residents of Canyon Lake are invited to receive part of over $25,000 in free spay or neuter vouchers starting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Animal Friends of the Valleys shelter in Wildomar.

The event is part of Spay Day USA, a nation-wide event that is celebrated on the last Tuesday of February across the United States.

The event goal is to help end pet overpopulation by ensuring that pets are fixed and not having unwanted litters.

According to the National Council on Pet Population, cats can go into heat at as young as 4 months old, and dogs can have puppies at as young as 5 months.

With 50 percent of litters being un-planned, it is crucial to have pets sterilized early to help keep pets out of shelters and in their loving homes, according to AFV officials.

Animal Friends of the Valleys said it is dedicated to promoting humane care of animals through education and a humane, pro-active animal services program.

It is committed, officials said, to preventing the suffering of animals and to ending pet overpopulation in the communities they serve.
