2019 YEAR IN REVIEW – Part 3

Canyon Lakers welcomed a new year this month and with it hopeful anticipation of the things ahead for the POA, city and residents. The beginning of the year is not only a time to look to the future but it’s an apt time to reflect on the changes and revisit some of the events that happened in the community over the past year.

Last week, The Friday Flyer featured a look back at events that happened in the community from April through June 2019. This week, The Friday Flyer takes a look back at events that happened in the community from July through September. This four-part series will wrap up next week with a look back at events that happened from October through December 2019.

July

The ever-popular Taco Tuesdays were in full swing at the lodge.

The POA Board approved funding in the amount of $19,740 from the Capital Improvement Fund for two 20-foot sections of wave attenuation devices for the main lake rental docks.

The sun-faded sign at the entrance of the Canyon Lake Country Club was replaced with a new sign that includes an aluminum LED backlit top clearly stating all the newly renovated country club has to offer.

The POA installed new LED entry signs at the east and north gates the week of July 1.

Men’s Golf Club member Marv Tweedy shot two holes-in-one seven days apart on the same hole with the same club while golfing with the same foursome. He shot his first hole-in-one on July 3 and the second hole-in-one on July 10, four days before his 88th birthday.

Canyon Lakers and their guests enjoyed the movie “Open Season 2” poolside during the POA’s Flick-N-Float Movie Night on July 6.

The Family Matters Club hosted its 6th annual Sand Castle Building Contest and Pirate Treasure Dig during Taco Tuesday on July 9 at Sunset Beach. The first place winners were brothers Carson and Cruz Dilucchio.

As part of the library’s “It’s Showtime” themed Summer Ready Program, Avian Behavior International visited the library to educate and delight patrons on July 10. The free show featured professional bird trainers and their performers Beatrix the barn owl, Linus the African white-necked raven, Hailey the saker falcon and Larue the crested caracara​.

The Tennis Club held its Doubles Mixer on the morning of July 13.

On July 15, the City of Canyon Lake completed a staffing change at Station 60, switching from “municipal” to “non-municipal” (otherwise known as “traditional”) staffing.

Forty-eight players competed in the Women’s Golf Club’s two-day Couples Eclectic Championship on July 16 and July 23. The Overall Gross winners were Marilyn Bridges and Steve McCain. The Overall Net winners were KK and Jesse Beecher.

Tennis pros Pete Walrod and Meghan Dizon hosted a second summer Jr. Tennis Program for kids ages four through 16 from July 15 through July 19.

On July 22, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Lake Elsinore Station began offering the public parking lot for use as a community meet-up location where individuals conducting Internet purchase transactions can meet.

Eighteen Canyon Lake Ski Club members qualified to compete in the Western Regional Waterski Championships the week of July 22 at Laku Landing in Windsor, Colorado.

Canyon Lakers Jennifer Brunner and her daughter Tayler Brunner were in the California Coast Credit Union in Menifee during an armed robbery on July 26.

The community came together to say goodbye to Al “Santa” Van Beenen during a memorial service on July 27 at Canyon Lake Community Church.

More than 30 members of the Senior Chair Volleyball Club gathered at the senior center on July 27 for an Ice Cream Social featuring root beer floats, ice cream and all the fixings. The cool treats were a welcome relief from the 100-degree weather.

Louise and Bill Stevenson celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on July 28.

Canyon Lake Councilman Jeremy Smith and his wife Elissa welcomed their new baby girl, Raegan, into the world at 2:50 a.m. on July 30.

July was a busy month for pool staff. According to the POA, approximately 10,628 people visited the pool in July, 489 people visited on July 4 and 349 kids participated in swim lessons. There was one pool closure.

August

Community Patrol answered 473 calls for service in August.

The POA Board of Directors approved funding in an amount not to exceed $3,425,000 toward the renovations and improvements to 15 community parking lots and Canyon Lake Drive North from Vacation Drive to Goetz Road. The parking lots include Blue Bird Hall, the country club, Diamond Point Park, East Port Park, the equestrian center driveway entrance, Gault Field, Holiday Harbor Park, Indian Beach, lodge/tennis/Sunset Beach, Moonstone Beach, north ski areas east and west, Operations yard, Sierra Park and the senior center.

The Canyon Lake City Council approved Resolution No. 2019-27 and Resolution No. 2019-28, authorizing the city manager to submit letters of interest to the United States Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management (BLM) indicating the city’s desire to acquire two parcels (APN: 349-200-012 and APN: 349-290-0030) that are managed by the BLM.

Representing the West, Canyon Laker Stacy Norred placed 9th in the nation in Individual Swivel at the 2019 Indmar Marine Engines Division 1 National Show Ski Tournament. The event was held Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 at Hidden Lake in Warsaw, Indiana.

The Fine Arts Guild hosted a free summer concert for the community at the Holiday Harbor Park amphitheater on Aug. 10. The Jumping Jack Flash Rolling Stones tribute concert was well attended.

With a total fish weight of 12.92 pounds, Chuck Moreno won first place in the Bassmasters Club’s monthly tournament on Aug. 10. He also earned the title “Big Fish of the Day” with a bass weighing 5.84 pounds. The team of Travis Wright and Jim Wright came in second place. Dave Brittenham and Chevy Holmes took third place.

The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and the POA took water samples from Happy Camp, Holiday Harbor, Indian Beach and Sierra Park on Aug. 15. The test results showed that there were no microcystins or cyanotoxins detected.

The Fitness and Triathlon Club hosted the 8th annual Paddle and Pedal Regatta on Aug. 17 at Indian Beach.

The POA hosted its final summer Flick-N-Float movie at the pool on Aug. 31.

In a letter delivered to City Manager Chris Mann and Deputy City Clerk Ana Sauseda on Aug. 19, Canyon Lake Mayor Larry Greene resigned his position as mayor and as a member of the City Council effective Tuesday, Aug. 20. According to the letter, the resignation was due to the continuing and evolving medical condition of his wife Sparrow.

The Mommy N Me Club resumed its fall semester on Aug. 23.

The Canyon Lake Association of Men (CLAMS) hosted a community Bingo Fundraiser on Aug. 24 in the Holiday Bay Room at the lodge.

Members of the Travel Club enjoyed a two-hour cruise and champagne brunch on John Wayne’s Wild Goose yacht in Newport Beach on Aug. 25.

September

The Pickleball Club presented scholarships to Canyon Lake students Tray Bowen and Cassidy Potter.

On behalf of the City of Canyon Lake, Mayor Jordan Ehrenkranz presented a proclamation to the late Sparrow Greene during the Regular Meeting of the City Council on Oct. 2. Councilman Larry Greene accepted the proclamation on her behalf.

The POA hosted the 7th annual Maui Monday on Sept. 2 at Sunset Beach. The popular community event featured food, music, contests and performances.

The POA Board of Directors approved funding on Sept. 3 in the amount of $15,183.82 from Capital Improvement for the purchase of a third RU2 radar mobile speed trailer.

At the Sept. 4 City Council Open Session Meeting, the City Council adopted an ordinance and a resolution that outlined how the city would handle vacancies on the City Council when they arose, including the current vacancy created by the resignation of Mayor Larry Greene.

Canyon Lakers Kevin Thayer and Jamie Devine tied the knot on Sept. 6 at the Pirate’s Cove Estate in Boulder City, Nevada.

The Woman’s Club hosted a pre-party to kick-off the annual Mermaid Festival. Neptune’s Saloon was held on Sept. 6 at the home of Mickey and Daryl France.

The Bassmasters Club hosted the 33rd annual Kids Fishing Derby on Sept. 7. The annual event draws between 200 to 400 young anglers each year.

Fans of the Doobie Brothers were treated to a re-creation of the 70s rock group on Sept. 7 at the lodge. Sponsored by the Fine Arts Guild, “Listen to the Music” showcased such iconic rock classics as “China Grove,” “Long Train Running” and “Black Water.”

Animal Friends of the Valleys appointed seasoned animal welfare advocate Monica Wylie as the shelter’s new executive director on Sept. 9.

The Canyon Lake Kids Club kicked off its fall semester on Sept. 10.

In honor of the victims of 9/11, Canyon Lakers Angie and Michael Bazaldua donated a fire hose American flag to the Sports Stop in the Towne Center on Sept. 11.

The flag was handmade by Napa fireman Ryan Chagonjian, who made it out of retired fire hoses that were used to fight the October 2017 Northern California wildfires. Ryan spent nine days fighting the fires.

The Woman’s Club kicked off its 2019-2020 season on Sept. 11 at the lodge. Bonnie Wade started her second term as president.

According to The Friday Flyer weatherman Pat Elliano, the high temperature the week of Sep. 11 to Sept. 17 was 106 degrees.

The Pickleball Club held its End of Summer Tournament the weekend of Sept. 13 and 14. The two-day event featured club members competing in six categories.

Santa Rosa Academy hosted Menifee’s annual Freedom Run on Sept. 14. The event featured races, a car show, vendors, food, drawings and activities for kids.

Canyon Lakers Jackie and Jim Leonard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 17.

The Woman’s Club hosted its 5th annual Mermaid Festival on Sept. 21 at Indian Beach. The community-wide event featured food, contests, vendors, opportunity drawings, grand prizes, a Mermaid Grotto and the ever-popular Cardboard Boat Challenge.

The Lions Club hosted its annual Pancake Breakfast the morning of Sept. 22 at Holiday Harbor Park.

The POA installed new replacement docks at Happy Camp on Sept. 25. The gas dock was resurfaced to match the new docks.

The Travel Club hosted it’s Beach Blanket Bingo Dinner-Dance on Sept. 27 at Holiday Harbor Park.

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce hosted the 9th annual Oktoberfest on Sept. 28 in the upper parking lot of the Towne Center. The family-friendly event featured live music by the American Bavarian Brass Band, traditional food, beer and wine, contests, a kids zone, vendors, face painting and more.

Canyon Lakers of all ages were invited to learn to ride a wakeboard or improve their wakeboarding skills at the Wakeboard Club’s Learn to Ride Day on Sept. 28 at the north ski area.

The POA and City of Canyon Lake hosted the annual Canyon Lake City Golf Championship on Sept. 28 and Sept. 29.

The Family Matters Club hosted its 3rd annual Western Barbecue on Sept. 29 at Holiday Harbor Park.
