ALB celebrates 40 years of weekly golf games

The After Lunch Bunch recently celebrated its 40th anniversary of weekly Friday afternoon golf games. The ALB was formed by Canyon Lakers Mel Prince, Harry Fritsch and Jim Magill, whose jobs allowed them to take off Friday afternoons.

Mel Prince passed away many years ago, Harry Fritsch still resides in Canyon Lake but no longer plays golf and 93-year-old Jim Magill serves on the AFB Committee.

At the end of each year, the ALB holds an annual tournament that includes prize money and a free lunch at the country club. Only golfers who played in a minimum of 12 Friday games during the year qualify to play in the tournament.

Twenty-one of the 27 qualifies golfers participated in this year’s tournament. The format was Individual Tin Whistle. The results are as follows:

A Flight

1st place: Bobby Gunter, 23

2nd place: Bob Stinson, 21

3rd place: Harland Newby, 18

4th place: Tom Fuhrman, 17

5th place: Walt Popper, 15

6th place: Carlos Ramirez, 16

B Flight

1st place: Chuck Hudson, 24

2nd place: Jim Musser, 24

3rd place: Leroy Madera, 23

4th place: Ed Doidge, 23

5th place: Ross Hanover, 21

6th place: Nick Valencia, 20

In addition to the game of Individual Tin Whistle, there was a 31 maximum Skins game.

The winners are Harland Newby on hole 1, Ed Doidge on holes 3 and 8, Chuck Hudson on hole 6, Ross Hanover on hole 7, Mike Pinto on hole 14, Nick Valencia on hole 17 and Jim Musser on hole 18.

The results of last Friday’s weekly game are as follows:

1st place: Mike Pinto, Bob Stinson, Jim Paulis and Bob Clow, 126.

2nd place: Harland Newby, Nick Valencia, Oscar Rowland and “Blind Draw” Bob Clow, 129.

The winners of the weekly Skins competition are Harland Newby on holes 2 and 3, Mike Connor on hole 4, Tom Fuhrman on hole 7 and Bob Stinson on hole 8,

The Closest to the Pin contest was held on two of the par threes. Jim Paulis won on hole 11 and Oscar Rowland won on hole 17.

The ALB welcomes new players. The format for play changes from week to week. The entry fee is $5 with an optional Skins competition for $5.

Entries are open to male golfers with an established handicap. Tee time is at 10 a.m.; signups are taken between 8:30 and 9:15 a.m. in the Magnolia Room at the country club or by phone by calling Bob Stinson at 951-249-4565.
