City to honor Veterans

The City of Canyon Lake invites the community to honor veterans at the 11th annual Veterans Day Celebration on Monday, Nov. 11. The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. with a flyover by the Warbirds West planes, made possible in part by a generous donation by Canyon Lake residents Barbara and David Spraul.

Serving as master of ceremonies will be Veterans Day Committee Chair Vicki Warren.

The Elsinore High School Flying Tigers Jr. ROTC under the direction of Major Charles Ruhl will post the colors. Mayor Jordan Ehrenkranz will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

One rose for each Canyon Lake veteran who passed away this year will be placed in the urn next to the Veterans Monument along with an extra rose for the unknown veterans. A floral wreath also will be placed at the monument and will remain there for one week.

Chuck Casey, a former nuclear electrician in the Navy and an active volunteer in the community, will be reading the poem “Old Glory.”

As in past years, veterans of all five branches will be encouraged to stand during the singing of their anthems.

Special music will include patriotic songs by the Canyon Lake Choraleers, who will also provide the music during a rifle and saber exhibition performed by the Flying Tigers. Mike Shroyer of Good Time Entertainment will also provide patriotic music. Taps will be played Tress Maksimuk of Dark Isle Bagpiper when representatives deliver the wreath and roses to the Veterans Monument.

The Canyon Lake Quilters will be hosting a free opportunity drawing for a “Quilts of Valor” quilt. The drawing is for Canyon Lake veterans.

Canyon Lake resident Jill Batinich will be giving a presentation on patriotism.

In preparation of Veterans Day, volunteers placed 200 flags around the Veterans Memorial Park last weekend. The flags were donated by the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce. Residents were invited to purchase a flag in honor of a loved one. Each sponsored flag bears a yellow ribbon with the name of the honored veteran.

On Wednesday, the Veterans Day Committee and community volunteers started placing flags in the yards of every veteran registered with the city.

The flags are donated by residents Warren Kelsey and Jack Wamsley. Warren and Jack were among the men who helped spearhead Canyon Lake to cityhood and served on the first Canyon Lake City Council.

The Canyon Lake Ladies of the Lake group prepare the flags for the volunteers by grouping them and tying a yellow ribbon around each one.

The list of veterans was assembled by residents registering with the city. Registration is reserved for veterans and active duty service members who currently reside in Canyon Lake or are former residents of Canyon Lake but still have a family member who resides in Canyon Lake. The list is updated annually. Those who already registered with the city do not need to register annually.

The registered names are also added to the veterans banner that hangs inside the City Hall building and displayed at the annual Veterans Day Celebration.

The following individuals are registered with the city:
