Yacht Club kicks off cocktail sunset cruises

The Canyon Lake Yacht Club is poised to have another great season of events. The club’s popular monthly sunset cocktail cruises kick off Apr. 20 and run through Nov. 2.

The boats depart from the lodge dock and take a leisurely cruise around the main lake to Catfish Cove where boats tie up and members watch the sunset, listen to music and pass appetizers and desserts from boat to boat.

The cruises are open to residents 18 years of age and older. Boat ownership is not a requirement to participate.

The cruises started in 2018 and gained popularity throughout the summer with the largest of the cruises consisting of 11 boats and 69 residents.

The 2019 cruise dates are Apr. 20, May 18, June 1, July 13, Aug. 3, Sept. 7, Oct. 12 and Nov. 2. Dates and times are subject to change. Dates and times are posted approximately two weeks in advance on the Yacht Club’s Facebook page.

The Yacht Club was established in 1990. Annual membership is $15 per person. Quarterly dinner meetings are held at the lodge on the fourth Thursday of the month. Dinner is $20.

Despite being mostly a social club, the Yacht Club hosts several events that benefit the community. The club’s Lake Clean Up Day is an annual event held on the second Saturday of May. Members of the club volunteer their boats and time to clean up the shoreline of the East Bay and main lake. “It is always discouraging to see the number of bottles and cans that are scattered around the shoreline,” said Commodore Dave Dain.

The club also gives back to the community through its Scholarship Fund. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a Canyon Lake senior. In 2018, the club was able to raise enough funds to award a $2,000 Scholarship.

The Yacht Club’s biggest event is its annual Parade of Lights boat parade. Club members volunteer countless hours to make this a great event for the community.
