CLAPPS to host Beautification Golf Tournament May 6

For more than 30 years, the men golfers of Canyon Lake have sponsored an annual golf tournament to raise money solely for beautification projects at the golf course. The event has raised more than $50,000 to enhance the course.

In the past, the tournament was hosted by a number of groups, including the Men’s Golf Club and the Green Committee. This year, the Canyon Lake Association of Past Presidents (CLAPPS) will be hosting the Beautification Tournament. The tournament is set for Saturday, May 6, at the Canyon Lake Golf Course.

The entry fee is $45 and includes lunch and prizes for “Jack and Jills,” “Jack and Jacks” and “Jill and Jills.” The format for this year’s tournament is Partners Best Ball. Golfers may pick their own foursome or enter as a single and be placed in a group. Sign ups are taken at the Golf Pro Shop beginning at 6:30 a.m. Free range balls will be provided for practice. A live auction will follow the awards ceremony. The tournament is open to the public.

All proceeds from the Beautification Tournament will be used for golf course beautification projects. Past projects include brass yard markers, brass distance plaques, expanding the putting green and a practice bunker to name a few. Recently, 13 benches were purchased at a cost of nearly $10,000.

The Beautification Tournament is formally known as the Tree Tournament. The Tree Tournament was started in 1982 by Jim Magill and his late wife Christine. The entry fee was one 15-gallon tree. As a result of the tournament, 217 trees were donated and planted on the golf course that year. When no more trees were needed, the tournament name was changed from the Tree Tournament to the Beautification Tournament.
