Spotlight on Seniors

It’s not too late to recognize high school seniors who graduated with academic or athletic honors from local private or public high schools. Parents or students are invited to send a photo and college resume information naming awards and community involvement for the annual “Spotlight on Seniors” series. Meet Pack 346

Youngsters interested in Scouting are invited to head to Sierra Park this Sunday, July 10, at 11 a.m. for a beach day with Cub Scout Pack 346. “Bring a lunch and meet the pack,” says spokesperson Susan Gamble. Cub Scouts is for boys entering grades 1 to 5. For more information, call 951-363-3346.

Bingo at the Senior Center

The Lioness Club hosts Bingo every first and third Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center. Games are open to all members of the community and are $20 for a 12-sheet set and $10 for a six-sheet set. Funds raised by bingo are contributed to Lions’ projects for the sight-impaired and the needy of the area.

Toastmasters Meets Weekly

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce Toastmasters Club meets every Tuesday, 12:05 to 1:05 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room/Council Chamber. The group works on public speaking and leadership skills.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Perris Station Sgt. Ralph Rico provided the following report of arrests that occurred in the City of Canyon Lake from May 30 to July 3, 2016. Residents are reminded these reports represent arrests of suspects and not convictions of a crime.

June 7, 2016 – Warrant Service – 23000 block of Bluebird Dr., Canyon Lake – CN-161590003 – 10:53 a.m. – Frankie Theodore Carmona, 32 years, was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

June 10, 2016 – Vehicle Theft – Big Range Rd. and Hoofbeat Way, Canyon Lake – CN-161620012 – 6:47 p.m. – Kevin James Kelly, 45 years, was arrested for felony vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.

June 27, 2016 – Terrorist Threats – 22000 block of Village Way Dr., Canyon Lake – CN-161790012 – 1:05 p.m. –Joshua Allen Remer, 42 years, was arrested for felony terrorist threats.

July 2, 2016 – Warrant Service – 31000 block of Railroad Canyon Rd., Canyon Lake (outside gates) – CN-161840013 – 9:12 p.m. – Keith Allan Curtis, 46 years, was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant.

July 3, 2016 – Illegal Drugs – Canyon Lake Dr. and Skipjack Dr., Canyon Lake – CN-161850018 – 6:11 p.m. – Anthony Steven Larner, 38 years, was arrested for misdemeanor possession of illegal drugs and under the influence of illegal drugs.

July 3, 2016 – Public Intoxication – 22000 block of Canyon Club Dr., Canyon Lake – CN-161850022 – 7:33 p.m. –  Isaiah Thomas Rolon, 18, was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant.

Historical Museum

The Menifee Valley Historical Museum contains displays about Canyon Lake history, provided by Canyon Lake pioneers Don and Elinor Martin. The museum is open Sundays, from 1 to 4 p.m. Don and Elinor sometimes serve as docents. It’s located in the old Menifee Elementary School on Garbani Rd. in Menifee.

Reading Cinemas Cal Oaks in Murrieta is showing family favorites for $1 every Wednesday and Thursday, at 10 a.m., through August 11. There are specials on concessions as well. See these films again on the big screen:

Through September 7, Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) provides additional weekday and weekend trips to the Oceanside from the Murrieta Walmart and Temecula Promenade Mall. Round-trip cost is only $6. Parking is free.

Coffee with Nancy

Residents are invited to meet with Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District Division 1 Director Nancy Horton, a Canyon Lake resident, the last Tuesday of every month, 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Sports Stop. She is available to talk about changing guidelines for water conservation, questions about the district’s conservation rebates, etc. Nancy also invites residents to bring their water bill for clarification of costs.

Caregivers Connection

Men and women who provide care for their husbands, wives or parents for illnesses such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart issues or Parkinson’s are invited to attend Caregivers Connection, a support group that meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in room 6 in the gym of Canyon Lake Community Church from 10 a.m. to noon. Genealogy Research

Sewing, Quilting Group

Canyon Lakers are invited to the Senior Center for sewing and quilting every Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring a project and sewing machine or just come visit and check it out. For more information, call Terri Ireland at 951-246-2571.

Breast Cancer Resources

Bosom Buddies is a breast cancer support group in Canyon Lake led by Janelle Basham and Kimberly Slingerland. They mentor, educate and support newly diagnosed breast cancer patients during their breast cancer journey. Visit www.CLBosomBuddies.com and Canyon Lake Bosom Buddies Facebook page.

Michelle’s Place is a breast cancer resource center serving this area, located at 27645 Jefferson Ave., Ste. 117, in Temecula. The center’s mission is to provide emotional and educational support to those touched with breast cancer and facilitate breast health care services. Host Families Sought

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, in cooperation with area high schools, is looking for local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries: Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, to name a few.

ASSE students are enthusiastic and excited to experience American culture while they practice their English. They also love to share their own culture and language with their host families.

The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

Clothing Wanted

A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are continuous. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Lock Vehicles

Canyon Lake Community Patrol reminds residents to double-check the doors and windows in their vehicles each evening and be sure alarm systems are activated. Records show most thefts from vehicles in Canyon Lake occur because doors were left unlocked or windows left open. They also say residents shouldn’t leave items of value in front yards or driveways.

Open cars and valuables left outside can lead to “crimes of opportunity” that can be easily prevented. If a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Then call Community Patrol.

Family Matters Swapmeet

The 2nd annual Family Matters Club Swapmeet will be held May 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Port Park. Organizers have announced that parking spaces on the blacktop will be available for $15; vendors can reserve booth space on the lawn for $35. The Family Matters Club will be selling hot dogs, chips, snack food and beverages to keep everyone powered up for their shopping/selling.
