Swivel skiers ‘Flaunt It’ at the North Ski Area

Canyon Lake’s professional sports photographer Mike Clary was on hand to capture the action at last Saturday’s “Flaunt It’ swivel ski competition in the North Ski Area. It was a beautiful morning for the unusual event, with 13 young ladies competing for prizes in three categories: Open, 360 and 180.

_U7Y4507Part-time resident Stacy Norred, a national champion swivel skier, helped coordinate the tournament with help from Canyon Lake ShowCal Skiers, Al Van Beenen of the Canyon Lake Ski Club and Knotty Girl Designs. The three skiers from Canyon Lake were Stacy Norred, Donica Loney and Destiny Loney.

Sometimes described as “ballet on water,” each costumed competitor demonstrated a five-minute routine that began with a dance or skit on the dock and several passes of skiing to demonstrate tricks on a swivel ski. Each performance concluded with the skier skiing up a ramp and gracefully landing on the dock.

In the Open Division, Kaila Coffey of Salem, Wisconsin took 1st; Susan Talarico of Scottsdale, Arizona took 2nd; and Kate Hanne of Minocqua, Wisconsin took 3rd.

In the 360 Division, Stacy Norred of Santa Monica/Canyon Lake took 1st; Caroline Grubs of White Bear Lake, Minnesota took 2nd; and Jessica Trotman of Rochester, Minnesota took 3rd.

In the 180 Division, Grace Gurda of Northbrook, Illinois took 1st; Donica Loney of Canyon Lake took 2nd; and Destiny Loney of Canyon Lake took 3rd.
