Spotlight on Seniors

Jovana Cohen

JovanaJovana Cohen is a senior graduating from Temescal Canyon High School. She is the daughter of Maria and Phil Cohen and has been a top scholar and athlete all her life. She was awarded Academic All League with her 4.0 GPA and was chosen as Lake Elsinore School District Student of the Month for April.

Jovana has been a member of ASB (Associated Student Body) all four years at TCHS and has held the titles of Senior Class Vice-President, Historian, Junior Class Vice-President and Treasurer. According to Jovana, holding a different position in ASB each year has broadened her views of leadership.

She was very active in organizing and implementing the visions for school dances, including Homecoming, Winter Formal and Prom. She feels that ASB has taught her a great work ethic to use in the future and to become a better leader.

During her junior year, Jovana was chosen by the Rotary Club of Lake Elsinore for their annual Leadership Conference. “The Rotary Club Leadership Camp was an experience I will never forget,” she says, “I was able to learn new leadership skills and share ideas with my ASB class.”

Jovana is an athlete. She played club soccer from age 9 to her teen years. In addition, she danced competitively from a very young age all the way through high school. But Jovana feels that cheer has been her most influential sport activity.

She has been a member of the Varsity Cheer team all four of high school years. During her junior and senior years, she was instrumental in choreographing routines. Jovana especially enjoyed being Varsity Captain for her senior year and was voted as “Most Inspirational.” According to Jovana, working together as a team in cheer has taught her that “when a group of people work together and are willing to sacrifice for the common good, extraordinary feats can be accomplished.” As captain, Jovana brought her team together to win the League Championship this year.

Jovana will be attending North Arizona University in the fall. She will be majoring in education and looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that college life will bring. She hopes to become either a counselor or a teacher in middle or high school.

Jovana says her teachers, especially at TCHS, were instrumental in encouraging her to work hard to accomplish her goals. Most of all, Jovana credits her mother for being her biggest supporter and guide through life’s tough obstacles, and her father for his leadership inspiration and goal of becoming as great a teacher as he is.
