Choraleers take audience down memory lane

On Saturday, May 9, the Canyon Lake Choraleers provided a medley of musical numbers that sent audience members’ memories soaring. Some recalled hearing the songs sung at Sunday concerts around a park gazebo or bandstand in their home towns. Others, no doubt, were reminded of first loves, high school dances and Saturday night disco parties.

The concert was given in three sections: the first section was songs from the late 1800s to early 1900s, with “Musical Memories” introduced by JC Taylor. Songs popular from 1927 to 1965 were introduced by Musical Memories read by Jerry Tannery. Musical Memories for songs popular from 1976 to 2003 were read by Sue Eddleman.

Most of the numbers were sung by the whole group; however soloists performed at the beginning of each set: Larry Garland opened the concert by walking down the center aisle singing “McNamara’s Band, made popular by Bing Crosby in 1945. John Wilmes sang “Ol’ Man River” from the 1927 musical, “Show Boat.” And Arlene Gossett sang a heartfelt “My Heart Will Go On,” love theme of the 1997 blockbuster, “Titanic.”

The concert concluded with the theme song, “Thanks for the Memory” from “The Big Broadcast of 1938.” The song became Bob Hope’s signature tune.

Between each set of songs, drawings were held to announce the winning ticket for door prizes donated by local restaurants, businesses and individuals. Several members of the Royal Court helped with tickets, programs and as runners for the prize drawings.
