Family Matters Club treats seniors to spaghetti dinner

Many seniors in the community enjoy a monthly Potluck and Dance at the Senior Center, but this month they were in for a real treat when the Canyon Lake Family Matters Club provided a free spaghetti dinner, complete with salad, bread and dessert.

Members of the club who helped with the event were President Sosy Robinson, Vice-President Jenny Tepperson, Treasurer Larry Mar, Junior Board Members Karina, Trey and Kassidy, and club members Brian, Judith, Sam and Nate Bock. Donna Ritchie was on hand to take pictures. According to club founder Shawna Bowen, there was plenty of food for the 50-some seniors who attended.

The club also provided prizes for a free drawing: three tins full of recipes from Campbell’s, Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Hershey’s.

Shawna says the junior board members helped serve the food, noting, “It is great to teach them to bridge the age gap. It also allowed for the seniors to talk with a few of them.”

The seniors provided their own music machine for singing and dancing. Miss Teen Canyon Lake Karina Bowen previously learned ballroom dances as a member of Cotillion, so she was able to dance with some of the senior men who had been friends with facilitator Ed Strong.

Shawna learned that a few of the seniors in attendance live on her street, so they now have future coffee dates to talk and keep in touch. “We also plan to be back at the Senior Center sometime before the year is over and provide another meal. We hope to double the attendance,” she says.
