Neighborhood Watch group holds informal meeting

Twenty-five residents who live on Gray Fox Dr. gathered at the home of John and Sheryl Lewis on Dec. 2 for the 3rd annual Neighborhood Watch Pro- gram Pot-luck. John and Sheryl, who serve as volunteer block captains for a portion of Gray Fox Dr., host the annual event so neighbors can get to know each other better and stay informed about crime and security in Canyon Lake.
“The program has provided the op- portunity for all our neighbors to get to know each other and help each other out when needed,” said John.
During the informal meetings, John gives a 15-minute presentation. This year, John’s presentation was on earth- quake and disaster preparedness. “You
can’t help anyone else if you can’t help yourself in the event of a disaster,” said John. “It’s important to be prepared so we’re self-sufficient and can help neigh- bors if needed.”
John and Sheryl knew very few of their neighbors before they signed on as block captains for the program. Through their participation in the program, they now know most of their neighbors on a first name basis.
The National Neighborhood Watch Program was launched in 1972. It's one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the country, bringing citizens together with law en- forcement to deter crime and make com- munities safer. For more information about the program, visit nnw.org.
