Since 1995, the Canyon Lake Wom- an’s Club has awarded scholarships amounting to $190,900 to 153 local high school graduates and $54,400 to 53 con- tinuing education students. This year, the Woman’s Club was pleased to continue this vital program with scholarships awarded to seven recent Canyon Lake high school graduates and three continu- ing education students. The members of the Woman’s Club wish them continued success as they pursue their goals.
Following are the high school schol- arship winners with a brief resume of each:
• Erika Barsby is a recent graduate of Murrieta Valley High School. She will be attending Mercy College in New York this fall and plans to become a marketing analyst for a technology company. Eri- ka was active in the Science Olympiad, Mock Trial Debate Team, Track Team, Varsity La Crosse and was president of Marine Biology. She is an Honor Roll recipient and currently is working on her Gold Award in Girl Scouts (the equiva- lent of the Boy Scouts Eagle Award).
• Katlyn Edwards graduated from Temescal Canyon High School. She will attend Rose Hulman Institute of Technol- ogy. Her goal is to become a civil engi- neer and work for a major civil engineer- ing company. While at TCHS, Katlyn was involved with volleyball, track and field, student government, PTSA and Blue Hole. She received a number of aca- demic awards and was selected as Youth of the Year for Canyon Lake 2015–2016.
• Vanessa Garza graduated from Vis- ta Murrieta High School. She plans to attend the University of California, San Diego with the goal of becoming an an- esthesiologist as well as a naval officer. While at VMHS, Vanessa participated
in both the Air Force and Navy JROTC, was a member of the National Honor Society and received awards from the Daughters of the American Revolution, Military Order of Foreign Wars, Princi- pal’s List and Honor Guard.
• Kaitlyn Hofmeister graduated from Temescal Canyon High School. She will attend California Lutheran University in the fall. Kaitlyn plans to study biochem- istry and molecular biology with the goal to ultimately become a geneticist. While at TCHS, she participated on the tennis team and in the photography club. She belongs to the California Scholar- ship Federation and has received several academic awards, including the Award for Bi-literacy within the Lake Elsinore School District. Kaitlyn also helped cre- ate a tutoring program for one of the lo- cal elementary schools.
• Monica MacDonald will be attend- ing California State University, Fullerton majoring in Business Entrepreurship. She aspires to someday own her own business involving one of her interests – graphic design, baking or photography. While at Temescal Canyon High School, Monica was involved in numerous ac- tivities, including competition dancing, and was the TCHS Competition Dancer 2015-2016. She was senior class presi- dent, cheer captain, yearbook editor and homecoming queen. Monica received a number of academic awards as well.
• Brooke Marler is a graduate of Cal- vary Murrieta Christian School. She will attend Concordia University, majoring in Education with the goal to become an English-as-a-second-language teacher, eventually teaching in missions. Brooke was ASB president and co-founder of the Justice Club. She participated in cross country, Girls Bible Studies and

• Alexa McKee will attend the Uni-
versity of California, San Diego and has interests in teaching, therapy and envi- ronmental science. While at Temescal Canyon High School, Alexa was involved with the Debate Team and Dance Team. She was Sophomore Class President as well as a member of the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Feder- ation. Throughout her high school years, Alexa received awards to recognize her leadership and academic skills.
Following are the continuing educa- tion scholarship winners with a brief re- sume of each:
• Baylee Barckley will continue her studies at the University of Montana, majoring in marketing and management in the sports field. However, Baylee’s goal is to become a professional golfer – a goal she will no doubt attain, as evidenced by the numerous tournaments she has won. As a freshman this past year at Montana, Baylee has become number 3 on the golf team and continues to maintain a high grade point average. Additionally, Baylee volunteers at the
Missoula Food Bank and reads to chil- dren at an elementary school.
• Brandi Bemoll, upon completion of her studies at Mt. Jacinto College, will transfer to California State University at San Marcos were she will major in Business with the goal of becoming a business manager for a local company. Brandi is a certified pharmacy techni- cian and continues to work as she pur- sues her studies.
• Sarah Potter-Smith is attending the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Services in Boston. She con- tinues to maintain the above 4.0 grade point average she had at both Calvary Murrieta Christian School and the Uni- versity of San Diego, where she gradu- ated Summa Cum Laude in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in neuro- science biology. Sarah has continued to participate in community outreach proj- ects and recently returned from Nica- ragua with a medical organization pro- viding medical care to remote villages. Sarah will graduate in 2018 as a physi- cian assistant with a master of science degree in Public Health.
