A-6 THE FRIDAY FLYER JANUARY 2, 2015 President reviews past, looks to the future
BY DAVE EILERS
CLPOA PRESIDENT
Over the past year, we have contin- ued to work on improving the quality of life here in Canyon Lake. We were able to make significant advances on many projects and initiatives thanks to the leadership and dedication of my fellow Board of Directors and the outstanding work and focus on community better- ment by the Association’s staff.
The Lodge Remodel
Throughout this past year, the Asso- ciation maintained its financial health which enabled us to embark on several new projects. One of the most notable projects was renovating the Lodge. Since the grand reopening in May, the Lighthouse Restaurant and Bar contin- ues to attract new patrons.
The effect of the remodel has shown an increase of revenue by almost $100,000 from year-to-date sales versus 2013 (May to December), and has sur- passed all revenues made in the 2013- 2014 fiscal year. The remodel has not only impacted business flow in the res- taurant for the community, but has also attracted major corporations and ven- dors to book private events and partici- pate in Taco Tuesday.
Beautification Initiative
The Association’s Beautification Ini- tiative, introduced last year by General Manager Christopher Mitchell, is aimed at enhancing the parks and common ar- eas in the community.
Under this initiative, the Association successfully installed a new playground at Indian Beach. Historically one of the most family friendly parks in the com- munity, Indian Beach has been the site for theatrical productions, military band
concerts, chili cook-offs and count- less family celebrations. The new play- ground features swings, climbing struc- tures, slides and more.
Other projects completed this past year that were part of this initiative include new concrete stairs at Harrelson Park, work at Outrigger Park that restored the park for member use, and repairs to the playground at Holiday Harbor.
East Port Park Development
This past year, the Association started the process of looking East Port Park as an ideal location for future development to meet the needs of the many youth and recreation programs. As part of this pro- cess, a new prefabricated building was added and the snack area updated.
The Davis-Stirling Act, the law governing homeowner associations, went through
a comprehensive amendment on January 1, 2014. This past year there has been a lot of work done to update the Association’s bylaws to ensure they are in compliance with the new law and reference new code sections.

Golf Course
In August, the Association was ac- cepted into the Metropolitan Water District’s SoCal Water$mart program to convert 17.8 acres of turf into natu- ral drought-tolerant landscape. Work began in September to remove the turf and, once complete in May 2015, there should be substantial long-term water savings at the Golf Course.
Committee Reorganization
We also looked at making processes within the Association’s organization more efficient, such as reorganizing the committees. Together with Associa- tion staff, we closely reviewed the com- mittees and made changes to allow the committees to better focus on the Asso-
ciation’s specific roles and responsibili- ties. Additionally, the modified struc- ture reclassified work groups as project groups. This project is currently being implemented throughout the organiza- tion.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, we are excited to en- ter 2015 by continuing our work to im- prove the quality of life in Canyon Lake. There are several projects and priorities that we identified at the start of our fis- cal year and will continue to work on.
Community Building
One of Canyon Lake’s most popular amenities is the Tennis Courts and we will be looking at adding a building that can be used for tournament meet-ups, various club meet-ups and storage. This facility will be located adjacent to the ex- isting courts; conceptual plans approxi- mate the building will be 1,200 square feet. Adding two pickle ball courts also is under consideration.
Main Gate Improvements
The Main Gate redesign will continue to move forward as we move into 2015. The new design is planned to be more efficient for both residents and their guests. The design plan includes creat- ing a vehicle turnaround prior to enter- ing the gate, along with adding another incoming lane for a total of three lanes.
Additionally, there are plans to add new security cameras and incorporate a new radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology at the Main Gate. RFID ac- cess is becoming the new standard for gated communities to increase security and enhance operational efficiency.
