Michael Kan writes ‘epic science-fiction adventure’

Meet Michael Kan, a journalist who sought adventure in China for seven years while covering the technology industry with visits to iPhone factories, trade shows and technology executives across the country.

In his off time, he sought adventure in the realm of science fiction by working on novels involving aliens, robots and a galactic war.

Michael recently finished his second novel and is now back from China and living in Canyon Lake with his parents, Sandy and Ling Kan. Sandy and Ling moved to the U.S. from Taiwan in 1979 and met at Truman State University.

bookLing got his Computer Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from Texas Tech and PSU. Sandy got her Management Information Systems master’s degree from Texas Tech. Both worked in IT before retiring in 2014 and moving to Canyon Lake in April 2015.

Their son Michael was born in Phoenix and grew up in Beaverton, Oregon. He graduated from the University of Michigan where he majored in History and Asian Studies. He began working as a journalist and moved to Beijing to cover the technology sector.

Of her son, Sandy says, “Since he was a child, he has always enjoyed sci-fi, especially Star Wars and Star Trek; so writing a space opera novel was always a passion of his. After seven years of brainstorming and writing, his first novel, called ‘Remember the Starfighter,’ was self-published in July 2015.”

She adds, “In developing the book, he incorporated life experiences, including those he had in China, into the story. The theme of trying to find one’s place in the world features heavily in the plot. It also has plenty of space battles. The novel itself revolves around an unstoppable alien force threatening to conquer the galaxy.”

Now in May 2016, Michael has published the sequel, “The Forsaken Empire.” Both novels are available at Amazon.com. “Remember the Starfighter” already has received four and half stars from 106 customer reviews.

One reviewer wrote, “’Remember The Starfighter’ is truly an epic science-fiction adventure. It weighs in at over 600 pages, but it reads and moves along at such a breakneck pace that it seems like you’ve read something much shorter when you arrive nearly breathless at the end of the story. There aren’t many authors brave enough to present such a massive work as their debut release. In fact, most writers these days would have turned this into a series of 4 or 5 books. I am glad Michael Kan did not do this. I liked having everything right there so I could take in the entire story in all its glory. Everything is great about this book: the characters, the plot, the action. I would love to see this turned into a major motion picture. I would be sure to pitch out a lawn chair while waiting in line to buy tickets.”

Another wrote, “A true epic space opera, seldom seen today. I fell in love with this book right at the beginning and was sad to see it end. This is no 225-page four-part series; stretched out over four books so the author can make more money. ‘Remember the Starfighter’ is 600-plus pages of pure delight. There are aliens, conspiracies, romance, melodrama, massive space battles and very dangerous situations the hero must overcome.”
