CLPOA enters into Fifth Amendment . . .
A-3
“This truly is a monumental step for- ward. We are very pleased that hard work from both sides, and the patience and participation of CLPOA’s members, has produced this durable and lasting agreement, which will preserve the spe- cial character of the Canyon Lake com- munity for decades to come.”

process for future encroachments into the Lake/onto the shorezone, which involves all the necessary stakehold- ers (CLPOA, CLPOA’s Members and EVMWD).
CLPOA wants to be sure that every-
one is on the same page in terms of what improvements are being maintained in the Lake/on the shorezone. Currently, there is no standard process between the stakeholders as to what improvements are being maintained, which could lead to inconsistent rights and obligations be- tween CLPOA and EVMWD as to the
improvements and property involved. CLPOA wants to change that so that everything is as fair, consistent and predictable as possible. CLPOA says they are committed to cooperating with EVMWD to resolve these remaining is- sues.
A spokesperson for CLPOA said
POA appoints Eric Kazakoff to general manager
The POA has appointed Eric Kaza- koff, former director of operations, to the position of general manager. Eric was hired in October 2016 to replace Mike Morrow who resigned from the director of operations position in Sep- tember.
Eric’s spent the majority of his career in senior business management roles. His professional background includes more than 35 years of experience in construction and facility management. In addition to managing his own con- struction company, he’s served multiple years as the chief executive officer of a heavy construction equipment and ve- hicle auctioneering company. He also served two terms on the Board of Direc- tors for a homeowners association that represents 4,000 residents.
Eric will directly oversee Op- erations, Human Resources, Accounting, Information Technology and Contracts.
Currently, Eric also is focusing on filling the human resources manager and direc- tor of operations positions.
“We are very excited that Eric has accepted the general manager position, and to be quite candid we think the com- munity will be really impressed with his work ethic and management skills.” said POA Board of Directors President Bruce Yarbrough. “Eric has a dynamic back- ground and from day one we saw his exceptional leadership skills as he took control of the management of multiple projects.”
In addition to appointing a new gen- eral manager, the POA has created a new assistant general manager position. In doing so, its able to divide the daily operational management so that more attention is provided to all areas.
Lynn Jensen, who was hired in 2001, has been appointed to this new position. Throughout her years of employment, Lynn has worked in just about every po-
sition at the POA. The POA said Lynn has developed strong leadership skills and has a great working relationship with staff, management, vendors, the membership and the Board of Direc- tors.
In her new position, Lynn will report directly to the general manager and be responsible for overseeing Planning and Compliance, Communications and Marketing, Member Services, Activi- ties, and Food and Beverage.
Eric said he is excited to start this new journey as general manager. “Knowing I have someone as experi- enced and qualified as Lynn to help me lead made my decision to take the role even easier.”
The POA said the Board will be working closely with the pair to ensure that Canyon Lake’s property owners continue to be provided with the best amenities, resources and services pos- sible.
Candidates discuss reasons for wanting to serve
Four candidates have announced their intent to run for the three positions on the Canyon Lake Property Owners As- sociation Board of Directors.
The three seats currently held by Bruce Yarbrough, Eric Spitzer and Ed- ward “Ed” Horton are up for election on May 11.
Tom Nathan, Phil Hawgood, Paul Chenette and Michael Harris have com- pleted and turned in their “Notice of Intent to Run” packets and announced their candidacy. To view their resumes and statements of goals and objectives, visit the POA’s website at canyonlake- poa.com.
The Friday Flyer invited the can- didates to answer a series of questions ovedr the next few weeks. During this period residents will have a chance to hear directly from the candidates and learn what they hope to accomplish if elected to serve a two-year-term on the Board of Directors.
In this week’s Q&A, The Friday Flyer asked candidates to provide their background and why they wish to serve on the POA Board. The candidates are listed in order drawn by official lottery as they will appear on the ballot.
QUESTION:
In 500 or fewer words, please provide your background and why you wish to serve on the POA Board.
Tom Nathan
My educational and professional background is in business administra- tion. I have a bache- lor’s degree in ac- counting from the University of South- ern California and a master’s degree in financial manage-
with the Men’s Golf Club, Little League, Co-Ed Softball Club, Men’s Softball Club, Tennis Club and am currently the president of the Ski Club.
As director, one of my goals is to protect and preserve our exclusive use private community that Canyon Lake already is while helping to plan for an even better community in the years ahead. Maintaining and enhancing ex- isting amenities makes our community a desirable place to live and provides residents with a variety of recreational activities to enjoy. Developing new fa- cilities as the community evolves is also important to support aspirations of the 4,800 members.
When I first moved to Canyon Lake, locking my car or even the door on my house was not important. I felt safe in- side our private, gated community. I no longer feel that comfort and other resi- dents have shared similar feelings. An- other goal for me as director will be to elevate the sense of security felt by ev- eryone residing inside the gates.
My financial background provides the expertise needed to properly review current Association expenditures as well as analyze those proposed for the future. The current subsidies for Country Club and Lighthouse Restaurant locations are a concern, and I plan to use my prior food and beverage experience to help
find solutions there.
Current Association processes are
sometimes overly complicated and time consuming. Those pains are felt both by the members and the POA staff working on behalf of the members. I will work to find solutions to simplify those pro- cesses to better serve the members.
Being a director requires some criti- cal attributes. One must be unbiased in their thinking and decision making; one must be responsible to the financial health of the Association; and one must accept that Board decisions are likely to result in criticisms from some members, so one must be “thick-skinned.” I’m confident that I possess each of these di- rector requirements.
ment. Over the past 30 years, I’ve been an accountant and auditor for a major HMO organization; controller for a medical services provider; owner and operator of two restaurant/bar locations; sales and finance manager for a retail boat dealership; and most recently as in- ternational controller for a $1.5 billion global leader in direct marketing.
My first visit to Canyon Lake was as a guest in the late 70s. I returned as a guest in the late 90s and saw a more ful- ly developed community than what I had experienced 20 years earlier. I decided to make Canyon Lake my permanent home in 2001 and have been a full-time resident ever since.
I currently serve on three CLPOA committees: Finance Committee, Recre- ation Committee and Rules and Regula- tions Committee. During my 16 years in Canyon Lake, I’ve also been involved

In 1985, my wife Sara, our new- born baby Trip and I arrived in Can- yon Lake. We met our agent who had scheduled an ap- pointment to see a home advertised as a “Waterfront Home.”
The agent set up a number of homes for us to view. I can remem- ber my excitement as we approached
