OCTOBER 7, 2016 THE FRIDAY FLYER A-7 CL skiers medal at ski championship in Spain
Canyon Lake water skiers Carol Brooks and Diana Parker recently re- turned from competing in the 2016 World Over 35 Waterski Championship, held in Toledo, Spain from September 14 to 18. Both women earned medals in the over 55 division.
Carol qualified to ski in Slalom, Trick and Jump and earned a silver in Slalom. Diana qualified to ski in Jump and Trick and earned a bronze in Jump.
Waterskiing’s Over 35 Waterski Championship attracted 189 top athletes from 28 countries. The U.S. team alone had 63 contenders and, as a team, won the gold medal. France won the silver and Canada the bronze. The U.S. athletes
combined to earn 40 individual medals, including 14 gold medals. Qualifying for Worlds is determined by the IWWF International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation, which goes off the world- ranking lists. There is a preliminary round at Worlds to qualify for the fi- nals. Carol and Diana were the only two skiers from Canyon Lake who qualified from the (IWWF) International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation World Rank- ing list.
When they weren’t skiing, Diana says she and Carol “toured castles and ca- thedrals, zip-lined across the river in To- ledo, hung out by the pool/spa, and had lots of tapas.”
