MAY 20, 2016 THE FRIDAY FLYER A-9 SPOTLIGHT ON SENIORS
It’s time to recognize high school seniors who are graduating with academic or athletic honors from local private or public high schools. Parents or students are invited to send a photo and college resume information naming awards and
community involvement for the annual “Spotlight on Seniors” series. Please email information and photos to news@goldingpublications.com. This feature will run as long as it takes to include all the seniors who send information.
Karina Bowen’s smiling face has be- come well known to Canyon Lakers for her involvement in community service projects/activities put on by the Family Matters Club and for her service as Mer- maid Queen (philanthropic represen- tative) for the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club.
Karina also has served on the Can- yon Lake Royal Court as Miss Pre-Teen, Miss Jr. Teen, Miss Teen and Overall Talent. As a member of the Royal Court she assisted with numerous community activities like the Easter Carnival, Fiesta Day, Parade of Frights, Parade of Lights, Tree-Lightings, ribbon-cutting ceremo- nies and more.
In spite of being extremely active in Canyon Lake, Karina is graduating from Villa Park High School in Orange County, where she has been on Honor Roll with straight A’s and is a member of the Key Club, Helping Hands, Feminist Club, Slack Line, Drama Club, Chemistry Club, Club Sandwich and Best Buddies. She also was a member of Villa Park’s State Champion Volleyball Team in 2013 and has won awards in Track and Field, and participated in several school plays.
Karina has been competing in various types of pageants ever since earning 2nd place in a Hawaiian Tropic Pageant in 2001. Some of these have included Na- tional America Miss, Miss Angelic Pho- to, Miss Heart of the USA, Miss Elite Beauty California and more.
Among several titles Karina earned in 20115-16 was Mermaid Queen of the Lake, a competitive position that required a high level of community ser- vice and was awarded at the Woman’s Club’s Mermaid Festival in August. In this latter role, she helped with Canyon Lake Woman’s Club activities through- out the year.
In addition to earning community service hours at Canyon Lake events, Karina has been involved with Samari- tan’s Purse, Farm Gleaning, Anaheim
Senior Center, Relay for Life, OC Peace Fest, Operation Prom Girl, First Har- vest Food Bank, American Book Drive, Thanksgiving for Soldiers and Opera- tion Christmas Child.
Because of her volunteerism, she has received the Presidential Volunteer Ser- vice Award every year since 2011. She also has received proclamations from the Governor of California and from the City of Canyon Lake, and was nominat- ed for Riverside Outstanding Teen of the Year in 2015.
Karina, as Mermaid Queen, is pictured on the runway of the recent Woman's Club Fashion Show.
With her drama and pageant back- ground, it’s no surprise that Karina has worked as a spokesperson, singer and performer for several events put on by Big Mama Earth, and has appeared in several TV shows and commercials, in- cluding The Mentalist, Cougar Town, Jessie, Modern Family, Rogue, The Mindy Project and more.
Karina will be attending Pepperdine University this fall where she plans to major in Business with an emphasis on marketing.
