Paddle & Pedal Regatta to cruise next Saturday
Paddlers and pedalers will gather for the 4th annual Paddle & Pedal Regatta, hosted by the Fitness and Triathlon Club, on Saturday, August 29, beginning at 10 a.m. at Indian Beach. Everyone with a paddle board, kayak, canoe or pedal boat is invited to join the non-motorized cruise of the East Bay. A limited number of rental and demo boards will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Following the event will be a club-sponsored burger barbecue, which will be available to those who donate $5 per person, as well as a drawing for prizes donated by event sponsors. Please bring a side dish to share! Barbecue proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
He notes that several records will be attempted, including the longest chain of skiers, most riders on differ- ent objects behind one boat and an at- tempt by Tony’s uncle, Mike Murphy to ride the world’s tallest hydrofoil.
Many Canyon Lakers have seen Mike riding his tall hydrofoil around the Main Lake during shows. The hy- drofoil he plans to ride tomorrow mea- sures 11-ft. 4-in.“Never before has so much water skiing history been dem- onstrated in one day,” says Tony.
The event is free and open to the public. Canyon Lakers who choose to go will see some familiar faces. John Whitlow will help announce. Mike Clary will be taking photos. Ron Stack, of Air Boom, will be doing a wake kite demonstration. Stacy Nored will be do- ing several ski acts, including “old time doubles.” The ShowCal Skiers will be building a pyramid and other tricks. And Chuck Sacks is the title sponsor: California Skier 50 for 50.

Mike Murphy of Canyon Lake, inventor of Sky Ski, will attempt a Guiness World Re- cord for highest hydrofoil.
Klarich’s ‘50 for 50’
It been 10 years since Tony Klarich celebrated his 40th birthday with his “40-40- 400 Skier Gone Wild” birthday party on Canyon Lake. During that event, he skied 40 laps on 40 objects doing 400 tricks.
Now Tony is turning 50 and has an even bigger event in mind tomorrow August 22, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Long Beach Marine Stadium. In the “50 for 50” event, he is planning to ski on 50 objects behind a boat – everything from a wooden pallet and his grandma’s picnic table
to a skateboard and an ice chest. Guin-
ness World Records has declined to
certify his feat, so Tony says he will
be skiing on their book as a tongue-in-
cheek protest.
