In his upcoming “50 for 50” event, Tony Klarich is planning to ski on 50 objects behind a boat – everything from a wooden pallet and his grandma’s picnic table to a skateboard and an ice chest. Here is pictured in one the ShowCal Skiers shows in Canyon Lake.
Tony Klarich set to
ride 50 objects for
50th birthday party
It been 10 years since Tony Klarich celebrated his 40th birthday with his “40-40-400 Skier Gone Wild” birth- day party on Canyon Lake. During that event, he skied 40 laps on 40 objects do- ing 400 tricks. A brief video of his ex- ploits can be viewed on YouTube.
Now Tony is turning 50 and has an even bigger event in mind next Satur- day, August 22, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Long Beach Marine Stadium. In the “50 for 50” event, he is planning to ski on 50 objects behind a boat – ev- erything from a wooden pallet and his grandma’s picnic table to a skateboard and an ice chest.
Tony is a 10-time National and World Champion on a kneeboard, wakeboard and hydrofoil, but in recent years has be- come known as the guy who rides on ev- erything. Guinness World Records has declined to certify his feat in 50 for 50, so Tony says he will be skiing on their book as a tongue-in-cheek protest.
He notes that several records will be attempted that day including the longest chain of skiers, most riders on different objects behind one boat (representing the nine sport discipline of USA Water Ski, the governing body of towed water sports) and an attempt by Tony’s uncle, Mike Murphy to ride the world’s tallest hydrofoil.
Many Canyon Lakers have seen Mike riding his tall hydrofoil around the Main Lake during shows. The hydrofoil he plans to ride next week measures 11-ft.
4-in., so he will be attempting to break an official Guinness World Record.
“Never before has so much water skiing history been demonstrated in one day,” says Tony, who notes he and a friend will be demonstrating almost every aspect of towed water sports through the years. The day is organized into six acts that include a History of Wakeboarding, History of Hydrofoiling, Wooden Wonders and more.
Tony says, “The day will be both entertaining and educational, featuring vintage rides like a 1932 Aquaplane, 1958 Double Acts from Cypress Gar- dens, and a ride on the first wakeboard, a 1991 HO Hyperlite. Many of the rides will be costumed to their time periods.
In between acts, several of the world’s best skiers and boarder will be demon- strating towed water sports at their high- est levels.”
The event is free and open to the pub- lic. Canyon Lakers who choose to go will see some familiar faces. John Whitlow will help announce. Mike Clary will be taking photos. Ron Stack, of Air Boom, will be doing a wake kite demonstration. Stacy Nored will be doing several ski acts, including “old time doubles.” The ShowCal Skiers will be building a pyra- mid and other tricks. And Chuck Sacks is the title sponsor: California Skier 50 for 50.
