FEBRUARY 20, 2015 THE FRIDAY FLYER A-7 Kendra Nathan wins top award in essay contest
Kendra Nathan, daughter of Canyon Lake residents Tom and Erin Nathan, granddaughter of Director/Council- woman Dawn Haggerty, was a finalist in an essay contest sponsored by the Amer- icanism Committee of Temecula Valley Elks Lodge.
Kendra is a 5th grader at St. Jeanne’s de Lestonnac School, a private Catholic school in Temecula where her mother teaches 7th and 8th grade history and social studies. Her essay on “What the Pledge of Allegiance Means to Me” was chosen as one of three finalists in the 5th/6th grade category from over 300 submissions to the Lodge.
At the awards dinner on February 10, Kendra was awarded 1st place from the
Temecula Valley Elks Lodge and 1st place for all 12 Lodges in the Southeast Elks District. Her rewards for winning 1st place at both levels were $50 and $25 Barnes and Noble gift cards respec- tively. Her essay now will be judged against 1st place winners from the 18 Elks districts in California.
Kendra is on the Dean’s List at her school, with straight A’s. She was se- lected to play a lead role in the school’s Christmas program, “The Nutcracker.” She is a junior varsity cheerleader and is nationally ranked in water skiing in her age group. Her brother, Connor, won the same Elks award last year and was selected Student of the Year for the Tem- ecula Valley schools.

The Pledge of Allegiance
BY KENDRA NATHAN
The Pledge of Allegiance is a huge motivation to respect our country and should be deeply thought about when said. To me, the Pledge of Allegiance is a promise or oath of loyalty to the Republic of the United States of America. When I say the Pledge of Allegiance I really think of the words: Under God, Indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all, and of the United States of America.
When I say United States of America I think of all 50 states united as one country working together. When I say Under God I think of being loyal to our God who reigns over us and protects us and our coun-
try. “With Liberty and Justice for All” makes me think of freedom and fairness for every single person in the United States of America. Indivisible reminds me that our country will not be divided into parts.
The Pledge of Allegiance helps me remember the people that have died for our country and it also makes me think of patriotism. Patriotism is when someone prom- ises to be true to the United States of America and has devoted love, support, and defense for our country.
At my school we recite the pledge every morning. We do this to honor the nation and instill a sense of respect to the United States of America. To keep the Pledge of Allegiance meaningful I will think about what I am saying when I recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
