A-2 THE FRIDAY FLYER JANUARY 2, 2015 Year in Review – Part 1
Here are a few community highlights from the first six months of 2014.
January 2014
In the first week of January 2014, daytime tempera- tures in the mid 70s saw many people out in their shorts and flip-flops.
That month, Polar Bear Day, hosted by the Ski Club, and the “Fit Community” 5K/10K, hosted by the Tri- athlon Club, appealed to fitness-minded members of the community.
The City hosted a Alum Application Public Infor- mation meeting.

Awards went to the Tennis Club, Organization of the Year; Joanna Spiller, Citizen of the Year; Tammy Macias, Volunteer of the Year; Jocelyn Basham and Chloe Howard, Youths of the Year; and Jimmie Hed- rick of Canyon Lake Insurance, Business of the Year.
Glitches in signal communication upgrades at Rail- road Canyon Rd. and I-15 created traffic congestion for several days.
Residents listed in January “In Memoriams” were Marie Morrison, Don Wicen, John Spiller, Ron Myre and Virginia Kish.
March 2014
Stormy weather the first weekend in March 2014, brought 2.67 inches of rain and good fishing at East Port. Wind toppled a large pine tree onto vehicles at one home, and the rapidly rising lake level created is- sues for public and private docks.
The Lodge was closed for remodeling and removal of the grand staircase.
ShowCal Skiers became a sanctioned club. Bicy- clists were invited to participate in the 4th annual “Tour de Canyon Lake.” Canyon Lake Community Theatre presented “The Odd Couple.”
Canyon Lake wrestlers Aaron Allard and Derek Hayward advanced to the State Wrestling Finals in Ba- kersfield.
Lee Harman was inducted into the Pac-12 Confer- ence Basketball Hall of Honor.
The Association announced there would be no in- crease in POA dues.
Underground digging by an SCE contractor dam- aged utilities, causing a power outage and water loss for dozens of homes in one day.
The City and CR&R sponsored a Citywide Cleanup. W.C. Fields’ grandson, Allen Fields, visited the home of Carolyn Knight to pick up her late husband, Vick Knight’s, extensive collection of W.C. Fields memorabilia.
The one resident listed in March “In Memoriams” was Tony Iacono.
February 2014
At the February 2014 POA Board meeting, it was announced the lawsuit against former legal counsel Pe- ter Racobs and the law firm, Fiore, Racobs & Powers, had been mediated and dismissed.
The second Alum Treatment in Canyon Lake was conducted by Aquatechnix; however, unseasonably warm weather caused an algae bloom that coincided with the alum treatment, creating a foamy scum in much of the East Bay. It dissipated within a few days.
The Fine Arts Guild brought John Denver tribute performer, Jim Curry, in concert to the Lodge.
Family Matters became a sanctioned club.
Canyon Lake Little League and Girls Softball held their opening ceremonies.
Seven candidates announced their intention to run for the POA Board of Directors: David A. Eilers, Har- old Larson, George Irvine, Douglas Gordon, William Buchanan, Lawrence Neigel and Don Potenza.
