Leadership program for teens comes to Library

A new program for teens, the Youth Leadership Program, will begin at the Canyon Lake Library on Monday, February 8. The program is an outreach of Toastmasters International and will be held in cooperation with the Canyon Lake Library.

Librarian Sandra Brautigam, a member of the Canyon Lake Toastmasters, says, “Adults have discovered the benefits of the supportive environment for learning public speaking and leadership skills the Toastmaster program offers. It is also important for youth to have confidence when expressing opinions, discussing projects, making presentations, representing themselves for school and job interviews and presenting a confident self in conversations of all kinds.

Sandra adds, “I was able to participate in a similar program when I was a teen in Michigan. The experience and training opened many doors for me. I am glad to help provide that experience to local youth.”

The program is scheduled to meet the second Monday of the month for eight sessions. The first session is February 8 in a room provided by the City of Canyon Lake. Any youth interested should meet at the Canyon Lake Library. The meeting will start promptly at 4:05 p.m.

The teen book club, “The Perks of Being in a Book Club,” is meeting today, February 5, at 4 p.m. in the Library.

Next week’s schedule will include the weekly Toddler Story Time for ages 3 and under on Monday, at 11 a.m.; and the Canyon Lake Knitters on Wednesday, at 11 a.m. New participants of every skill level are invited to join the Knitters. Participants bring their own projects and materials.

The next Preschool Craft and Story Time will be on February 26 and will be a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Last week’s story time, “Hop Aboard the Dinosaur Train,” had a large turnout of 45 children and adults.

The Library will be closed Friday, February 12, for Lincoln’s birthday. It will be will be open regular hours of 10 to 3 on Saturday; then closed again on Monday, February 15, for Presidents Day. The book drop and internet site www.rivlib.net will be available during the holiday closures.

The Canyon Lake Library is located inside the City Hall building. It’s open Mondays, 10 to 7, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 to 6, and Saturdays 10 to 3. It’s closed Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The Canyon Lake Library is a member of the Riverside County Library System (www.rivlib.net) honoring cards and returns from other affiliated libraries.
