City Council meeting

The agenda for the December 2 City Council meeting is available at www.cityofcanyonlake.org. Meetings are televised live at Time Warner Channel 29 and Verizon Channel 39.

Any person wishing to address the City Council at its monthly meeting on any matter within the jurisdiction of the City, whether or not it appears on the monthly agenda, is asked to complete a “Speaker Request Form” available on the back counter.

Spark of Love Toy Drive

Studio 1 hair salon is holding a toy drive for local needy children. Unwrapped toys for boys are girls are welcome, as are $10 and $20 gift certificates for children over 12. The donations will be disbursed through the California firefighters’ Spark of Love Toy Drive.

Small Business Saturday

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce invites residents to support local business on Small Business Saturday, which takes place next Saturday following Thanksgiving. Chamber Director Alison Burrafato says, “Please join the Small Business Saturday promotion and shop your local businesses in the Canyon Lake Towne Center. It’s a great way to start the holidays and support our community!”

Lioness Friendship Brownies

The Canyon Lake Lioness Club is selling its famous Brownie Jars. The quart jars are decorated for the holidays, filled with the ingredients to make brownies for family, friends, neighbors. Only four ingredients need to be added: eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla and brown sugar. The recipe is under the decorated lid.

The Club is also selling smaller jars filled with candy or nuts. These jars also make great gifts. The brownie jars are $10 each or two for $18. The smaller candy/nut jars are $6 each or two for $10.

To purchase these gifts, call Barbara Weatherman at 951-244-1618. The proceeds from this project will be used to help those in need.

Southwest Women’s Chorus

The Southwest Women’s Chorus will present its 16th annual “Christmas in the Air” concert on Saturday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 6, at 2 p.m., at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater. The concert is a mix of traditional favorites, carols, classical, humor and audience sing-a-longs.

Ticket prices are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and military and $11 for students. Tickets are available at www.temeculatheater.com, the theater box office at 42051 Main St. in Temecula or 1-866-OLD-TOWN.

Temecula Valley Symphony

The Temecula Valley Symphony will perform a Holiday Extravaganza on December 19, at 2 p.m. at the Golden Bears Theater, Temecula Valley Hight School. Holiday favorites will include music from Duke Ellington, Home Alone II, Hanukkah, Handel’s Messiah and more. Tickets are available at www.TemeculaValleySymphony.org.

Donations Wanted

From The Lord Ministries is accepting clothes, shoes, gloves and beanies for men, women and children. Also appreciated are hotel sized shampoos, conditioners, lotion, bar soap, deodorants, tooth brushes, tooth paste and lip balm for hygiene kits. These items will be donated to families and homeless in need and may be dropped off at 30420 Bear River Dr. in Canyon Lake.

Need a Band?

The Temescal Canyon High School Jazz Band is available to play at holiday events. Besides their wide range of jazz music, they also offer a holiday music program. The band is comprised of 20 students, nearly all of whom are in the school’s marching band. To book this group, call Lyne Hall at 951-244-2101.

Caregivers Connection

Are you a man or woman who provides care for your husband, wife or parent? Anyone caring for a loved one for illnesses such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart issues or Parkinson’s is invited to attend Caregivers Connection, a support group that offers an opportunity for caregivers to share common problems, needs and experiences.

The group meets in room C5 at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. The next meetings will be held November 23.

Bingo at the Senior Center

The Lioness Club hosts Bingo every first and third Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center. Games are open to all members of the community and are $20 for a 12-sheet set and $10 for a six-sheet set. Funds raised by bingo are contributed to Lions’ philanthropic projects.

Genealogy Research

The Farmers Market operates every Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the upper section of the Towne Center parking lot. PEO Scholarships

The Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) is devoted to the educational advancement of women through scholarships, grants, awards and loans. P.E.O. scholarship opportunities are now available for undergraduate and graduate California women studying in a variety of fields. These scholarships will be awarded for the fall 2016 school year. Application forms are available online through January 10, 2016. Completed packets are due no later than February 1, 2016.

It features fresh produce from local farmers and fresh flowers from area growers as well as handcrafted items, vendor merchandise and freshly prepared food. It’s a good place to pick up fresh food for holiday meals and gifts from local vendors.

Host Families Sought

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, in cooperation with area high schools, is looking for local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries: Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, to name a few.

ASSE students are enthusiastic and excited to experience American culture while they practice their English. They also love to share their own culture and language with their host families.

The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

Breast Cancer Resources

Michelle’s Place is a breast cancer resource center serving this area, located at 27645 Jefferson Ave., Ste. 117, in Temecula. The center’s mission is to provide emotional and educational support to those touched with breast cancer and facilitate breast health care services. Clothing Wanted

A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are continuous. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Lock Vehicles

Canyon Lake Community Patrol reminds residents to double-check the doors and windows in their vehicles each evening and be sure alarm systems are activated. Records show most thefts from vehicles in Canyon Lake occur because doors were left unlocked or windows left open. They also say residents shouldn’t leave items of value in front yards or driveways.

Open cars and valuables left outside can lead to “crimes of opportunity” that can be easily prevented. If a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Then call Community Patrol.

MOMS Next

Mothers of school aged kids are invited to MOMS Next, a ministry of MOPS International. It meets every second and fourth Tuesday, 9 to 11 a.m., at Canyon Lake Community Church.
