Ahoy mermaids, pirates and wenches! The entire community is invited to the inaugural Mermaid Festival, scheduled for Saturday, August 22, at Indian Beach.

Spokesperson Lyne Hall says says the festival will include a Mermaid Marketplace with vendors, and a Mermaid Lounge selling beer, wine, soft drinks, water and the signature Mermaid Martini. The latter will be available in both alcoholic and kid-friendly versions.

The Woman’s Club will be selling hotdogs and pizza.

Entertainment at the Mermaid Festival will be provided by singer Aprile McKinnon. Also, look for an appearance by rival “Pirates of the Lake,” otherwise known as the Canyon Lake Yacht Club.

Activities will include a Mermaid Grotto for photos as well as competitions, games and crafts for the children. Tickets will be sold in the kids’ craft area for children to make mermaid clothespin, mermaid necklace, mermaid wand, pirate eye patch, pirate hat and pirate sword. Everyone is invited to come in mermaid or pirate-inspired garb.

Also scheduled are a pirate (temporary) tattoo parlor, the crowning of the Mermaid Queen and three competitions: Best Dressed Mermaid, Best Dressed Pirate and Best Dressed Booth (in keeping with the theme). An opportunity drawing will be available with many items donated by vendors and local merchants.
