Skiers ready to show off at Fiesta Day!

It’s not too late to be in the Fiesta Day Parade.

Fiesta Day is just two weeks away, on Saturday, May 23. The ShowCal Skiers aren’t the only ones getting ready for this eventful day, but they’re definitely the most photogenic as they practice their tricks in the North Ski Area and Jump Lagoon.

Along with members of the Ski Club and Wakeboard Club, ShowCal Skiers will be performing a midday Ski Show off the shore of Sunset Beach during Fiesta Day. ShowCal also will have regularly scheduled ski shows on most Sundays, beginning May 24. The weekly exhibitions will be held at 5 p.m. at the Jump Lagoon, across from Treasure Island. Check www.showcalskiers.org for updates.

In addition to the Ski Show, a number of special activities will mark this year’s carnival theme, “Fiesta Under the Big Top.” It’s not too late to sign up as an entry in the parade. The application form and parade details can be obtained at Member Services or on the POA website, www.canyonlakepoa.com. (Under Association News, click on “Fiesta Day Grand Marshals Announced.”) Applications are due by May 15!

Residents will want to plan ahead for street closures that will take place on the morning of the parade. Affected streets will close at 8:30 a.m. These include Canyon Lake Dr., from Village Way to Sloop, as well as Canyon Club and Lighthouse Drives. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at Canyon Lake Dr. and Yellow Feather, and travel toward the Lodge. Only pre-registered parade entries will be permitted in the parade.

The only ones who can enter the parade at the last minute will be participants who want to decorate a bicycle for the Bicycle Decorating Contest and veterans who want to decorate a golf cart for the Veterans Brigade. Both will need to check in at designated stations prior to the parade to sign a waiver.

Dave Harrigan is coordinating the veterans and recommends they have a sign on the front of their decorated golf cart that identifies the vet by name, branch of service and dates served. Dave can be reached at 951-746-3460.

The Bicycle Decorating Contest has two categories: “Youth 12 & Younger” and “Adult 13 & Older.” Winners in each category will receive $25 and a 1st place ribbon; 2nd and 3rd place ribbons also will be awarded. This contest is sponsored by ShowCal Skiers.

The Cardboard Boat Challenge also will have two categories for which prizes will be awarded: “Youth 12 & Younger” and “Adult 13 and Older.” Boats must be made of corrugated cardboard and duct tape only. Prohibited construction and/or decorating materials include wax-coated cardboard, glue, paint, markers, resin, epoxy, caulk, sealers, metal, plastic, wood, foil, pipes, foam, floats, tubes, tires, balloons, compressed gas, etc. There are more rules like this on the application form. Pre-registration is recommended. The application form is available on the POA website. The entry fee is $5 per Youth Boat entry, $10 per Adult Boat entry.

Fiesta Day includes more than 100 vendors selling food, merchandise and services. There is a kids’ zone with giant bounce houses, live music and a variety of entertainment acts. Sponsors will receive ample recognition and are still sought. Please contact Roanne Grasso at 951-244-6977 or abcbounceco@verizon.net. A few booth spaces are still available.
