SEPTEMBER 15, 2017 THE FRIDAY FLYER A-3 Canyon Laker helps Team U.S.A. win Walker Cup
The United States won back the Walker Cup from Britain and Ireland last weekend at the prestigious Walker Cup event at the exclusive Los Angeles Country Club in Beverly Hills.
The Walker Cup is a biennial series of golf matches between the top 10 ama- teur golfers in the U.S. against the top amateur golfers in Great Britain and Ire- land.
Eighteen-year-old Canyon Laker Nor- man Xiong was the youngest player in the competition and the second-young- est player ever selected to the American team. He played in all four matches dur- ing the two-day event. His three wins and one tie helped propel Team U.S.A. to a 19-7 victory and bring the coveted trophy back to the U.S.
At age 15, Norman won the American Junior Golf Association’s Nike Junior Invitational. He won the AJGA Thun- derbird International at age 17. In 2016, he was a member of the United States team that won its fifth straight Junior Ryder Cup. He finished 1 up.
Earlier this year, the University of Oregon sophomore received the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman award. This award is given to the most outstanding freshman in all of Division I college golf. He was also named the Pac-12 Freshman of the year and was a 2017 Division I Jack Nicklaus Na- tional Player of the Year semifinalist. Norman, who started playing golf at the
age of 4 at the U.S. Naval Base in Guam, moved to the United States in 2005, at age 6, to further expand his opportuni- ties in the game of golf. Initially mov-
ing to the San Diego area, Norman and his family relocated to Canyon Lake in 2009, when Norman was just 10 years old, to further expand his golfing oppor-
