Members vote in three new Board of Directors
The Canyon Lake Property Owners Association has a five-member Board of Directors who are collectively responsi- ble for the management and operation of the Association’s business affairs. The two-year terms of Directors Bruce Yar- brough, Eric Spitzer and Edward “Ted” Horton expired on May 11. The four candidates running for the three open seats were Tom Nathan, Phil Hawgood, Paul Chenette and Michael Harris.
The Annual and Special Meeting of the Members held on Thursday, May 11, was adjourned due to lack of quorum. The meeting was rescheduled for May 13. Quorum was met and the results were announced as follows:
Tom Nathan - 1,320 votes
Phil Hawgood - 1,010 votes
Michael Harris - 906 votes
Paul Chenette - 849
Michael Cook (write in) - 3 votes Chuck Moreno (write in) - 3 votes. The members elected Tom Nathan,
Phil Hawgood and Michael Harris to fill the three vacant seats on the board.
Tom Nathan said he looks forward to working with the POA board and staff. “Thank you to the members for their overwhelming support in this year’s election. I look forward to working with the POA Board and staff to continuously improve, enhance and protect our pri- vate community.”
Phil Hawgood said he will represent the Canyon Lake Property Owners to the best of his ability. “I wish to thank each and everyone who voted, said Phil. “I am hoping that each vote cast is as im- portant to you, the voter, as it was to me the candidate.”
Michael Harris said, “I am proud to become part of the solution to the nu- merous requests regarding security. Re- viewing the security applications and interviewing the prospective companies will be our first goal.”
The election of the officers is as fol- lows:
President - Paul Queen Vice President - Dale Welty Treasurer - Tom Nathan
Secretary - Phil Hawgood
Director - Michael Harris
There were two advisory votes on the
election ballet this year, fence height re- strictions and three-wheeled energy ef- ficient motorized automobiles. The ad- visory votes will be used as a survey to help gauge interest in the future amend- ments and do not constitute a formal vote to amend the CC&Rs and are not binding on the Board of Directors.
Board members say the fence restric- tion is an important issue because it’s one of the items most often brought be- fore the Architectural Control Commit- tee and Appeals Committee. These com- mittees have received many requests for taller fences over the years, but due to the current CC&R restriction, they have not been able to approve these requests.
The current fence height limit is re- stricted to five feet. The Board of Direc- tors say two of the reasons often given for wanting taller fences is greater pri- vacy and/or the fact that many of the standard fence heights for new pre-fab-
ricated fences is six feet.
Board members, staff and residents
themselves have fought for a fence height amendment over the years. The amendment was placed on the ballot in 2007, 2008 and 2009. A majority of the voters have shown in the past that they wanted the amendment to pass. Howev- er; it never passed because not enough voters voted.
The results of the fence height restric- tions advisory vote are as follows:
In favor - 1,080
Against - 213
The majority is in favor of changing
the five foot fence height restriction to a fence height not to exceed six feet.
The results of the three-wheeled en- ergy efficient motorized automobiles are as follows:
In favor - 596
Against - 708
The majority is against amending the
CC&R to allow future three-wheeled, energy efficient motorized automobiles within the Association’s jurisdiction.

BY TED HORTON
SPECIAL TO THE FRIDAY FLYER
To recognize and thank our commu- nity veteran heroes, Senator Jeff Stone will be honoring outstanding local vet- erans, including Canyon Lake resident Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth (Paul) LeGrice, with the 2017 Veterans Ser- vice Awards in the 28th Senate District on May 27.
gotten to know this community hero and am pleased to share some of what I have learned about Paul LeGrice.
Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from high school during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. After his initial tour of duty as an enlisted soldier, he attended Officer Candidate School, receiving his commission as an infan- try officer in 1965. Lieutenant Colonel LeGrice’s assignments included tours of
duty in Germany, the Republic of Korea, Vietnam and numerous stateside assign- ments. Suffering from mysterious fevers and joint pain suspected from exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam, Paul was hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medi- cal Center from 1985 to 1986.
During his years with the Army, Paul acquired a master’s degree. He has been presented with numerous awards dur- ing his service, including three Bronze Stars, a Silver Star and, most impres- sively, the Legion of Merit (LOM). The LOM is given for exceptionally meri- torious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.
In 2005 he was presented with the

sale at the museum.
For the anniversary celebration, Don
and Elinor put together a special exhibit about Canyon Lake for it’s resident to view that day only. “There will be a lot
of information about Canyon Lake and albums of photos, including one on the history of Fiesta Day that dates back to the first Canyon Lake Fiesta Day,” said Elinore.
“We have also doubled the size of the Native American exhibit, added one
new one, enhanced other exhibits and changed some artifacts in our display cases.”
Those who are unable to attend Sun- day’s celebration can tour the museum on any Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The mu-
seum gives free private tours for parties of 10 or more on other days.
The Menifee Historical Museum is located in two rooms of the former Me- nifee Elementary School at 26301 Gar- bani Rd., Menifee.
After withdrawing from active duty in 1993, Paul continued to work for the department of the Army as a civilian employee until he retired in 2004.
