County approves fire contract for Canyon Lake
After two years of pleading with the county to serve Canyon Lake with a smaller crew at a lesser cost so that Canyon Lake could reopen Fire Station 60, the Board of Supervisors approved a new one-year fire protection contract on Tuesday, May 9, for the City of Canyon Lake.
Riverside Country District One Supervisor Kevin Jeffries said, “Six months into the contract the city coun- cil will need to decide if it will bump up to three-person staffing or terminate the contract at the end of 12 months and
possibly create a city fire dept or close the station and contract with nearby cit- ies to provide services again.” He added, “It’s a start.”
Canyon Lake Mayor Vicki Warren said, “This is a great step for Canyon Lake. The city council has worked hard on this for sure and in particular new council member Larry Greene, who has been most instrumental. Well done Can- yon Lake.”
Opening the city’s lone fire station comes at a cost of $1.4 million. “A sub- stantially less cost than the $2.1 mil-
lion it was headed to before the station closed,” said Mayor Warren.
The agreement includes Fire Station opening with a two-man engine, includ- ing a paramedic.
The city leases the station from the Canyon Lake Property Owners Associa- tion. The lease requires the city to pay for the building’s maintenance. After being closed for nearly two years, the station is in need of repairs in order to be reopened and staffed by July 1.
In April, the council approved $110,000 for the repairs needed. The
council authorized City Manager Aaron Palmer to solicit proposals for the repair and maintenance of the fire station. Aar- on has assigned the task of soliciting the proposals to Charles Abbott Associates who will also oversee the entire project. “We’re working on the station now with the anticipation of opening it in July,” said Aaron.
Mayor Warren said Fire Station 60 is expected to reopen July 1. “We’re excit- ed about it,” she said. “I haven’t ordered the cake yet, but I’m going to.”
City council to appoint new mayor June 1
Due to Mayor Dawn Haggerty’s res- ignation during a specially-scheduled council meeting on April 26, the Can- yon Lake City Council will be tasked with appointing a new mayor at the city council meeting on June 1. Dawn did not resign as a member of the council.
Dawn resigned from her position as mayor after an Ad Hoc Reimbursement Committee said it found several mis- takes in some of the reimbursements she had submitted. The mistakes, it said, included lack of proper documentation
and errors on reimbursement forms that resulted in her being overpaid for some of these expenses.
Vicki Warren, the mayor pro tem go- ing into the April 26 meeting, has as- sumed the duties of mayor until the council officially appoints a mayor at the next city council meeting.
If the council elects to appoint Vicki as mayor, the council will also elect a new mayor pro tem at the meeting. The council also has the option of electing a new mayor pro tem whether or not Vicki
is appointed mayor.
Any person wishing to address the
city council at its monthly meeting on any matter within the jurisdiction of the city, whether or not it appears on the monthly agenda, is asked to complete a “Speaker Request Form” at the meeting. The completed form is to be submitted to the city clerk prior to an individual being heard by the council.
The city council has adopted a time limitation of three minutes per person. If commenting on an agenda item, com-
ments will be heard at the time that par- ticular item is scheduled on the agenda.
For anyone addressing the city coun- cil on items not on the agenda, the Brown Act does not allow discussion of such items. Therefore, the city coun- cil may only do the following: refer the matter to staff, ask for additional infor- mation or request a report back, or give a very limited factual response.
City council meetings are televised live at Time Warner Channel 29 and Ve- rizon Channel 39.
Annual Peace Officers' Memorial Service to be held May 22
Every year, all law enforcement agencies within Riverside County come together to honor and remember fallen officers at the Riverside County Peace Officers' Memorial Ceremony.
The 2017 Riverside County Peace
Officers' Memorial Ceremony will be held Monday, May 22, at 6:15 p.m. in front of the "Safe in His Arms Memo- rial" at 4102 Orange Street, Riverside.
The Memorial Run will begin promptly at 5:45. It is a moderate two-
mile jog for people of all ages. Early arrival is encouraged.
The Memorial Ceremony will begin immediately following the run. The ceremony will include a multi-agency helicopter fly-over and a fallen officer
tribute.
Two officers who were tragically
killed in the line of duty, Officer Lesley Zerebny and Officer Jose "Gil" Vega of the Palm Springs Police Department, will be added to the memorial this year.
