known as Railroad Canyon when de- velopers for the Foothill Lemon Com- pany and Temescal Water Company of Corona finalized a settlement with the Evans and Martin family on February 12, 1968, as the development of a new community known as Canyon Lake got underway.
Construction of a new general store began that March. The Village Store, centrally located on Village Way, was near the amphitheater, marina and launch ramp. It quickly became the focal point of the new development, especially for salesmen and their cus- tomers.
Elinor and Don managed the store four years for the Corona Land Com- pany, selling bait and tackle, camping necessities, fishing licenses and food goods. Later it was leased by Bruce and Marlene Lord (now Marlene Cathro). Some present day residents still re- member the Friday night steak fry the Lords offered during summer months. The area served as a campground for a couple of more years until the new campground was built on the west shore of the lake.
In August 1984, a property own- ers group calling itself the South Shore Marina filed plans to develop the parcel known as Lot 78 on Village Way Dr. (now Holiday Harbor) into four single family lots and several commercial lots. Contested by the Association, the situ- ation ultimately led to a costly lawsuit against the Association.
In June 1988, the POA Board of Di- rectors filed a Chapter 11 petition in United States Bankruptcy Court after a Riverside County Superior Court jury awarded $1.75 million in damages to investors of South Shore Marina Condo- miniums and Canyon Lake Associates, Inc.
The Association determined to keep the area as a park and, in March 1989, new resident Marti Norris submitted the winning entry to a contest to name the

new park. Other names suggested were “Cost Lott Bay,” “Million Dollar Park,” “Paradise Park” and “Omaha Beach.” The parcel was on Holiday Bay, so the name Marti suggested, “Holiday Har- bor,” was thought by judges to be both catchy and appropriate.
By April 1993, the old Village Store property and real estate office structure were removed by a church group at no cost to the POA. An RFP went out for a bid to establish a general profile for a
landscaped park and construction of a seawall.
In September 1993, the POA Board approved plans for the initial phase of the new Holiday Harbor Park, with a state-of-the-art playground and shaded picnic pavilions. It was the beginning of a new era and a new place for Canyon Lake families to make memories.
A lottery is held each summer for res- idents to win the use of pavilions for the 4th of July. Aside from that one date, the
smaller picnic pavilions are available year-round on a first come, first served basis. The larger pavilion and kitchen at the top of the park are available for rent by clubs and members by contacting the Activities Department at 951-244-6841, ext. 610.
