2019 YEAR IN REVIEW – Part 4

Canyon Lakers welcomed a new year this month and with it hopeful anticipation of the things ahead for the POA, city and residents. The beginning of the year is not only a time to look to the future but it’s an apt time to reflect on the changes and revisit some of the events that happened in the community over the past year.

Last week, The Friday Flyer featured a look back at events that happened in the community from July through September. This week, The Friday Flyer wraps up this four-part series with a look back at events that happened in the community from October through December through December 2019.

October

The Canyon Lake based Helping Hands Group collected warm socks for the entire month of October for local seniors in need.

With a total fish weight of 17.45 pounds, Jim Wright and Travis Smith came in first place in the Bassmasters Club’s October fishing tournament. Mark White and Steve Marin came in second place with five fish weighing a total of 14.73 pounds. Fishing by himself, Joe Merrill took third place with five fish weighing a total of 13.30 pounds.

Steve Marin caught a bass weighing 5.56 pounds, earning him the title of “Big Fish of the Day.”

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting for Wild Blush Studios on Oct. 4 in the Towne Center.

Hundreds of pre-1977 classic cars rolled into Canyon Lake for the 14th annual Canyon Lake Car Show on Oct. 5 at the lodge.

Canyon Lake Car Club member Jan Danker won a Top 5 award at the My Buddies Pizza Car Show on Oct. 9.

Canyon Lakers of all ages were invited to learn to ride a wakeboard or improve their wakeboarding skills at the Wakeboard Club’s Learn to Ride Day on Oct. 12 at the north ski area.

More than 80 CLAMS members and their guests attended the club’s “Country in the Park” BBQ on Oct. 16 at Holiday Harbor Park. The event featured a catered dinner, live entertainment, dancing and a 50/50 drawing.

Twenty-six Pickleball Club members dressed in a variety of creative and colorful costumes for the club’s annual Costume Party on Oct. 17.

The Woman’s Club hosted its 2nd annual Witches Afternoon Tea on Oct. 19 at the senior center. The event included lunch, a no-host bar, vendors, palmists, card readers and an opportunity drawing for Halloween and Thanksgiving-themed prizes.

The Fine Arts Guild presented its Neil Diamond tribute concert, featuring Jay White, on Oct. 19 at the lodge.

The Canyon Lake Family Matters Club hosted its 6th annual Halloween Carnival and Costume Contest on Oct. 20 at Holiday Harbor Park. The event featured trunk-or-treating, costume contests, carnival game booths, a craft station, face painting and vendors.

The Canyon Lake K9 Club hosted a Halloween Costume Contest for Canyon Lake dogs on Oct. 30 at the dog park at East Port Park.

Canyon Lake received its 13th dose of alum the week of Oct. 21.

Canyon Lakers Carol Brooks and Diana Sue Parker competed in the 2019 Pan American Senior Waterski Championships Oct. 23 through Oct. 26 in Bujama, Peru, where Carol won a gold medal in Slalom and Diana won a bronze medal in Jump.

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce hosted the 27th annual Parade of Frights on Oct. 26 in the Towne Center. The event featured trick-or-treating at more than 50 businesses in the Towne Center, costume contest and a costume parade.

Canyon Lake Community Theatre presented its full-scale, Broadway-style musical production of “Beauty and the Beast” during the last two weeks of October at the Stephen Price Theatre at Elsinore High School.

The POA hosted a spooktacular Halloween bash on Oct. 31 at the lodge.

November

Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District performed maintenance on the outlet valves at the Canyon Lake Dam throughout the month of November. The maintenance allowed EVMWD to inspect and repair components of the mechanical systems.

The Lions and Lioness clubs hosted their annual garage sale fundraiser on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 at the home of Lioness Shirley D’Agostino on Meadowlark Dr. The proceeds were used to help families in need.

The POA hosted a Dia de Los Muertos celebration on Nov. 1 at the country club.

The POA’s final 2019 “Concerts at the Lodge” series featured the legendary country music artist Billy Dean on Nov. 2. The Guilty Conscience duo Rochelle and Paula opened the show.

The Wakeboard Club closed out the season with an End of Year Banquet on Nov. 2 at Sierra Park. Awards were presented based on the club’s three competitions.

The Fine Arts Guild held its Annual Meeting on Nov. 4 in the Holiday Bay Room. The meeting was attended by 140 club members, who enjoyed a sit-down dinner at no charge and live entertainment featuring the five-piece band Moonshot.

According to The Friday Flyer weatherman Pat Elliano, the high temperature for the week of Nov. 6 to Nov. 12 was 94 degrees. The low temperature was 44 degrees.

Nine-year-old Canyon Lake resident Tyler Mrosek competed in his first UTV race at the 51st Lake Elsinore Grand Prix on Nov. 8. He took second place in his Carr One built Razor 170.

In preparation of Canyon Lake’s annual Veterans Day Celebration, the Veterans Day Committee and community volunteers planted 200 American flags in the Field of Honor at the Veterans Memorial Park in the Canyon Lake Towne Center on Nov. 9.

The Senior Center Committee held its annual Holiday Boutique on Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 at the senior center.

The City of Canyon Lake hosted its 11th annual Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 11. The celebration kicked off with a flyover by the Warbirds West.

Canyon Lake resident Kirsten Ha was among seven Student of the Month Program honorees feted at a recognition luncheon on Nov. 12.

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting for the Property Management Division at Coldwell Banker Associated Brokers Realty on Nov. 13 in celebration of its new location in the Towne Center.

The City of Canyon Lake hosted its 8th annual Frozen Turkey and Food Drive on Nov. 14. Ninety-three turkeys and approximately 1,500 pounds of food were donated.

Canyon Lake resident and 2019 Milestone Award contender Sara Price competed in the world-renown SCORE World Desert Championship Baja 1000 Nov. 19 through Nov. 24.

The 10th annual Many Wonders of Christmas was held on Nov. 23 at Canyon Lake Community Church.

More than 50 vendors filled the Holiday Bay Room and the grounds of the lodge for the Jr. Women’s Club’s annual Holiday Boutique on Nov. 23.

Fifty-six golfers participated in the Women’s Golf Club’s Gobble Gobble Jack and Jill Tournament on Nov. 23.

The Triathlon and Fitness Club hosted its 2nd annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. The event featured a non-competitive 5K Run/Walk and a 1K Kids Fun Run.

The Canyon Lake Art Association hosted its annual Art Show on Nov. 30 at the senior center.

Canyon Lake resident Donovan Dintelman, 47, was arrested in November and charged with robbing nine banks, including the Chase Bank inside Stater Bros. in Canyon Hills.

December

Canyon Lake turned 29 on Dec. 1.

The Canyon Lake City Council reorganized during its December Meeting and appointed Jordan Ehrenkranz to the mayor seat and Kasey Castillo to the mayor pro tem seat for the year 2020.

The POA and Jr. Women’s Club teamed up to host the 38th annual Tree Lighting Festival at the lodge on Dec. 1. The event featured a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, food vendors, performances, rides and a bounce house.

The lodge pool closed for the winter on Dec. 2.

The City of Canyon Lake hosted its Winter Wonderland and Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 5 in the Towne Center. The event featured visits with Santa, train rides, snow sledding, In-N-Out Burger, a petting zoo, gingerbread decorating, a Candy Land maze, face painting and holiday music.

The Woman’s Club hosted its annual Holiday Home Tour on Dec. 7.

Canyon Lake Scouts of Troop 2011 participated in a beach clean-up on Dec. 8 at Sunset Beach.

The rain didn’t stop members of the Bassmasters Club from participating in the club’s monthly fishing tournament on Dec. 7. Joe Merrill and 16-year-old Austin Moreno came in first place. Joe also caught the “Big Fish of the Day” with a bass weighing a whopping 12.51 pounds.

Canyon Lake seniors enjoyed a free Christmas-themed dinner party at the senior center on Dec. 8. Attendees were treated to a performance by the Canyon Lake Choraleers.

The 9th annual Golf Cart Parade rolled down Canyon Lake Drive on Dec. 8. Hosted by the Street Carts of Canyon Lake, the annual event raised hundreds of toy donations for local kids.

The Women’s Golf Club hosted its annual Christmas Tournament and Installation on Dec. 10. Lunch followed the tournament.

The Lions and Lioness clubs collected donations for Cops for Kids during their annual Christmas party on Dec. 10 at the senior center. Members from both clubs delivered the toys along with a $600 donation to the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station on Dec. 11.

The 9ers Golf Club hosted its annual Scholarship Tournament on Dec. 12.

Canyon Lakers dusted off their ugliest, overly festive holiday sweaters for the country club’s Ugly Sweater Party on Dec. 13. Prizes were awarded for the ugliest sweaters in various categories.

Chapter WW of the Philanthropy Educational Organization held its annual Christmas Luncheon and Boutique on Dec. 13 at the senior center.

Canyon Lakers and their guests gathered at lakefront homes and parks for the Yacht Club’s annual Parade of Lights boat parade on Dec. 14.

Canyon Lake kids started their day the merry way with a pancake breakfast with Santa on Dec. 14 at the north ski area pavilion. The annual event is hosted by the Ski Club.

The Canyon Lake Choraleers presented “The Colors of Christmas” on Dec. 15 in the Holiday Bay Room at the lodge.

Animal Friends of the Valleys hosted its first Howliday Open House on Dec. 18.

Brunch with Santa was held on Dec. 22 at the lodge. All kids who attended received a free gift.

Canyon Lake seniors welcomed 2020 at the annual New Year’s Eve Dinner-Dance at the senior center.
