Local youth organizes successful Socktoberfest

Saturday, Nov. 16, found 23 local middle and high school students actively working at Pins and Pockets in Elsinore sorting, bagging and preparing more than 3,000 pairs of socks that will be distributed to the needy by Helping Hands, a Canyon Lake based ministry that lives by the motto of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Need.”

Bob Sasser, founder and director of Helping Hands, hosted a Socktoberfest during which youth groups in Canyon Lake, Elsinore, Menifee, Murrieta, Temecula, Wildomar and surrounding areas were challenged to collect new socks to be packaged and given to the needy during the month of November. Community members were also encouraged to donate.

Eighteen “banana boxes” were filled to overflowing with the generous donations made by the various youth groups and schools.

Every month, Helping Hands delivers bags of food to more than 500 homes that lack the funds to purchase healthy food choices for their families. During the month of November, packages of socks will also be included so that, as the weather cools, the recipients will be able to have proper footwear.

Each bag of socks contained the following message to uplift the recipient. “As your neighbors, we are concerned about you. We hope these socks will make the approaching fall and winter a little warmer for you.” Also included was a personal note from the young person who packed the gift.

When asked what the mission of Helping Hands Group entailed, Bob shared, “Helping Hands has a heart for low-income seniors and is constantly offering them assistance in the form of food and guidance to available services. This year, along with our holiday distributions, we are blessed to be giving new socks donated by the community and local youth groups.”
